I had a nice, long vacation in Hawaii earlier this month to attend a friend’s wedding. This was my first time in Hawaii and although I’ve had my nerd pants on for many years, running away from the sun in order to keep my pale, geek pallor I was actually looking forward to lying down on the sand for days and tanning. Perhaps it was my body’s way of saying that I should probably get my share sunlight at some point in my life? Perhaps…
We started the trip on the island of Kauai, which definitely lacked the hustle and bustle of a big city. There’s nothing to do but kick back and relax! It was glorious. The wedding took place on this island at Haena Beach Park. It was absolutely beautiful and I did get teary eyed. The blue ocean and sky was too perfect for a setting!
We also went to Oahu, a more developed and tourist-centric island. Honolulu and Waikiki are pretty cool but I certainly preferred the beauty Kauai offered. We did the whole tourist shebang, including Pearl Harbor, the Dole Plantation, the Polynesian Cultural Center and Hanauma Bay.
My favorite restaurant was Helena’s Hawaiian Food. If you are in Honolulu, you have to eat at Helena’s and nom on their Pipikaula and fried butterfish. They are absolutely to die for… the butterfish was so perfect!
Of course, the pineapple whips from the Dole Plantation.
The Polynesian Cultural Center was pretty interesting and I guess, it’s just one of those “you should experience it once” if you’re going to visit Hawaii. I am not big on tourist activities, personally, but it was fun oogling the “island boys”, at least. Even though they were all from the colleges in the area. Slowly working on my creepy, cougar status — I mean, culture and learning… yeah!
Definitely watch the show at the Samoa area – the guy is hilarious and the most entertaining show there.
I will probably post more photos over at my tumblr (punkagogo.tumblr.com), if anyone is interested in more of my Hawaii exploits. It’s mostly beautiful oceans and delicious food. No biggie ;)
