I love Once Upon a Time. I love seeing characters I grew up with exist in our world and I love how the writers have adapted and evolved these characters. Recently it was revealed that there will be some additions to the town of Storybrooke, including Mulan (my favorite Disney ‘princess’), Lancelot, and many others.
There is one character, though, I am particularly excited for that will be appearing next season. That character is Captain James Hook.
I love the world of Peter Pan. I’ve read the book and watched almost every rendition there is of that story. I am, dare I say it, a Peter Pan fangirl. One of the main reasons for this is the character of Captain Hook. Hook is the embodiment of sinister adulthood. He is a gentlemen, a scoundrel, and the perfect villain to the youthful Peter. He is also dead sexy. The fact that I like him as much as I do would probably be an interesting choice of topic for anybody who study’s Sigmund Freud’s theories.
The casting for this iconic character has been revealed and I must say I totally approve. Irish actor Colin O’Donoghue (The Rite) will be the next man sporting the iconic arm ornament and is said to be one the main villains next season. He is described as “a confident pirate who never backs down from a fight; a man who seeks to crush and humiliate his enemies. But he also has the meticulous style and manners of a proper gentleman” (EW.com). It looks like the writers have captured the essence of Hook and it’s just a matter of time before we get to see this iconic villain on the screen once again. I’m excited to see how this character may be updated for Once Upon a Time and how he shall interact with the other characters on the show.
There is a promo for the next season of the show that reveals Hook’s presence. Feast your eyes, mateys:
This raises so many other questions. Will Peter Pan or Wendy ever appear in Storybrooke? Is Hook going to be ally or enemy to Mr. Gold? Will Neverland somehow be a part of the story? Most importantly, will Colin rock the long hair? I have to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about a television series. Color me a happy salty fangirly wench.
Like many children of the western world, I grew up with fairy tales. A lot of this is due to Disney and their wonderful animated films and that my parents used to read the original renditions of the stories to me when I was a child. For me, fairy tales are the epitome of nostalgia which is why I am so enamored with this show. I am now in my twenties and have a very different view of the world from when I was a little girl, but I still hold onto the things I love from my childhood. The writers of Once Upon a Time, in a way, have made my dreams come true in the sense that its the tales themselves that have grown up, like us, and they now exist in our reality. I feel so lucky that this show exists now because I feel like this is the perfect stage of my life to be re-examining these stories, and ultimately myself. It’s nice to go back to those things we loved from when we were children and to be reminded why we loved them in the first place.
… and, of course, to revisit creepy crushes from our teen years. Sigh.
For now all I can do is count the days until September 30th. And remember, magic is coming.
