Great Halloween Movies: ‘Hansel & Gretel Get Baked’

It’s the time of year again, kids. It’s time for your Auntie Giselle to tell you even more about some of her favorite Halloween flicks. This year I’m starting off with a new favorite of mine, Hansel and Gretel Get Baked.

Yes, you did read the title correctly. I discovered this movie because Netflix suggested it to me and with a title like that how the hell could I resist? This retelling of the classic fairy tale takes place in modern times in the city of Pasadena. Molly Quinn stars as Gretel, a sweet teenage stoner whose boyfriend goes missing after buying an incredible new strain of weed called Black Forest grown by a little old lady who lives by herself. It turns out that the little old lady, played by Lara Flynn Boyle, is a witch who uses her amazing weed to lure in teenagers so that she can eat them, steal their souls, and become young again. Yes, the plot sounds ridiculous, but what’s fun about Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is that it’s fully aware of how ridiculous it is and has fun with it.

This isn’t necessarily a scary movie, but it’s funny. You can tell Boyle had a lot of fun playing the witch and frankly she has some hilarious one liners. Of course the writer, David Tillman, managed to tie in some of the staples of the fairy tale such as leaving a trail of breadcrumbs (in the movie it’s Skittles), a gingerbread house, a Black Forest, and the infamous oven. There have been so many retellings and reinventions of classic stories, some more disappointing than others, so it’s refreshing to see one that’s actually creative and entertaining.

One of the things I really liked about this movie is that it’s female-centric. Gretel is the main character, not Hansel, and she’s the one that has to save the day. Her friend Bianca, played by the very funny Bianca Saad, helps out Gretel when it comes time to “storm the castle” so to speak and take down the evil witch. Another thing that makes this movie entertaining is that despite her villainous nature, you can’t help but love the witch and root for her.

If you’re looking for a fun movie to watch with your friends and one that would be good to watch in a… particular mood, if you catch my meaning, then I definitely recommend Hansel & Gretel Get Baked. It’s funny, a little campy, and in the spirit of Halloween.
