Interview: Thom Allison and SHUTUP, IT’S CHRISTMAS!

From a bartender (in space!) with a shady past to Mrs. Kringle, Thom Allison knows how to show his audience a fun time on screen or on stage. Check out our fun conversation with Allison about his cabaret Christmas show and his recurring role in SyFy’s Killjoys.

Shut Up, It’s Christmas! What is this magical cabaret show and what inspired this? Who is Lola Kringle and what are her wants and needs?

SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! is a cabaret I created that started as part of a smaller cabaret about 10 years ago. It was my second solo cabaret and it was a three set evening that I titled “Classic Christmas”, “Campy Christmas” and “Creepy Christmas”. Lola was part of Campy Christmas and she was only a small section. I wanted to do something a little different. Christmas-y but not so obvious and direct. I was inspired by A Charlie Brown Christmas. I wanted something that was funny, sweet and a little melancholy. I thought of being Santa but that was so “right on the nose”. So I thought about playing Mrs. Claus and telling stories about her life with Santa. But with all the bumps and joys. And I added the challenge of not allowing myself to use any Christmas songs for that section. It was all musical theatre songs with a couple of standards thrown in. It was a small section that people really enjoyed so much that several years later I developed her into a whole 50 minute act. She became the first act and then in the second act, I come out as myself and sing my version of Christmas songs, with anecdotes and audience interaction. And SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! was born.

So as you may be able to tell, Lola Kringle is Mrs. Claus. As she tells us in the show, Santa Claus is his stage name… Kringle is the name on the credit cards. Lola needs love and attention from her man, she needs to feel that they are partners. Lola wants him to be happy which he is when he is making children’s Christmas dreams come true. She also wants to have a good time.

If Lola had a squad, who would she pick to be in it?

Hahaha ooh interesting. She would have Gengis Khan’s wife, Madeline – she’s great with knives and makes a mean Mongolian Hot Pot. She’d have Persephone, Goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underworld – she weaves a lethal daisy chain. And Crystal, Frosty the Snowman’s wife – she can freeze the warmest heart and is a whiz with frozen cosmos

What is your favorite thing about the holiday season and Christmas? What is your personal wish for this holiday?

I’m a huge sucker for the holidays. I love the lights and music. But my favorite thing is still the Christmas specials and movies. In particular, White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. As for my personal wish: my father passed away on Dec. 4 and I’ll be going home for Christmas. My wish is to give joy and laughter and comfort to my mother and brother.

SyFy’s Killjoys is such a cool and fun show. What is your favorite part about playing the role of Pree?

Thanks. I love Pree’s freedom to be exactly who he is. He makes no apologies for anything. Plus the make-up and costumes are pretty fun.

Pree has such an interesting past as a “stylish dictator”— would you ever want to do a spin off or mini-series exploring his story?

Uh, yeah! Are you kidding? I just about pooped when I read the script about my being a warlord. I would love to explore that character in the violent world that is hinted at in his past.

Do you have any other upcoming projects?

I have to finish my mini-tour of SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! and then we begin filming season three of Killjoys in the new year.

If you can pick just one superpower what would it be and why?

Mind control. I would love to have the ability to make people feel empathy, really feel the impact of their hatreds and fears and prejudices ….. watch out, world!
