SDCC 2019: Batman Beyond 20th Anniversary

Batman Beyond celebrates 20 years since it premiered in January 10, 1999. I was 15 years old when the show first aired on the WB Network, and I vividly remember getting excited for this show. I immediately fell in-love with the series from the very first episode and had been a loyal fan since then– to this day!

It was very exciting to chat and reminisce with the writers, directors and cast members of the show during San Diego Comic-Con. Yes, I was in the same room as Terry McGinnis himself, Will Friedle, as well as our favorite Batman, Kevin Conroy.

When asked if he is surprised at the positive response to the show even after 20 years, Friedle replied, “I’m not [surprised]– first of all, if you put on the original Star Wars movies or any of the things that have endured, it’s all about story-telling. If you’ve got good story-telling, it’s something that’s going to last. Batman Beyond, you go and watch it now, it was hitting on themes like bullying, dating, high school stuff that are still so relevant today. In a way, more relevant today than it was then and yet they were already hitting on that stuff.

So, that coupled with Terry being a kid in high school, who all the kids watching the cartoon went: he’s not a billionaire, he’s just a guy, I can be Batman! Those two things, I think, really made the show last and endure. I think it will continue to do that.”

This ultimate collectors Blu-ray box set will be individually numbered for a Limited Edition release of 50,000. The Batman Beyond: The Complete Animated Series Limited Edition Blu-ray box set will be available on October 29, 2019.
