INTERVIEW: Jake Raymond on Ashes, Writing and Gymnastics

Jake Raymond completed his feature film, Ashes, which will be making the festival circuit starting with a world premiere at the 2017 Milledgevile Film Festival in Georgia. The film is about a man who explores and experiences his grief in losing his parents by fulfilling their final wishes. Jake talks to us about creating, writing and what inspires him. Check out the interview below.

Tell us about Ashes and your character, Liam. What was it like playing a character who experienced tragedy and going through that journey?

Ashes is a passion project and my first feature film as a writer and producer. The motivation for the film was to create an acting opportunity for myself and my friends. There are so many talented actors these days, most of the time just getting an audition is a win in itself, so I wanted to write a script that I could cast my friends in and give us all an opportunity to work together. Along the way I found a whole new love for film-making and I’m excited to continue my career not only as an actor, but also as a filmmaker.

In the story, we find my character Liam, after discovering his parents’ final wishes are to have their ashes scattered where they first met. Joined by his closest friends, they set out to explore the place for themselves as they navigate old memories while creating new ones.

What initially drew you to your character, Meagan, in That’s My DJ?

That she was a party girl with a heart of gold! Also I really like my quiet time and country music and staying in and while Meagan and I are both very playful people, we have completely different playgrounds. I was excited to play someone that was so joyfully immersed in this world of partying and EDM and DJs that I was so far removed from.

Interview: Tod Fennell on The Art of More, Video Games and Superpowers

Tod Fennell has been acting since childhood and has starred in fan favorites, including Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? Currently, he can be seen as Cliff Kerbis in The Art of More, produced by Dennis Quaid and starring alongside Kate Bosworth. He is also doing really amazing work in video games as a motion-capture actor for Tom Clancy’s The Division. Tod talks to us about his work and whether he’d be a hero or a villain with superpowers…

What is The Art of More about? Can you tell us about your character in the series?

It’s a thrilling, fast paced drama about the shady underworld of New York city auction houses. The characters go to extreme lengths to maximize profits and seal multi million dollar deals. Without giving too much away, my character is the CEO of an online bidding platform, he’s cocky and laid back, a little too much so.

Interview: Thom Allison and SHUTUP, IT’S CHRISTMAS!

From a bartender (in space!) with a shady past to Mrs. Kringle, Thom Allison knows how to show his audience a fun time on screen or on stage. Check out our fun conversation with Allison about his cabaret Christmas show and his recurring role in SyFy’s Killjoys.

Shut Up, It’s Christmas! What is this magical cabaret show and what inspired this? Who is Lola Kringle and what are her wants and needs?

SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! is a cabaret I created that started as part of a smaller cabaret about 10 years ago. It was my second solo cabaret and it was a three set evening that I titled “Classic Christmas”, “Campy Christmas” and “Creepy Christmas”. Lola was part of Campy Christmas and she was only a small section. I wanted to do something a little different. Christmas-y but not so obvious and direct. I was inspired by A Charlie Brown Christmas. I wanted something that was funny, sweet and a little melancholy. I thought of being Santa but that was so “right on the nose”. So I thought about playing Mrs. Claus and telling stories about her life with Santa. But with all the bumps and joys. And I added the challenge of not allowing myself to use any Christmas songs for that section. It was all musical theatre songs with a couple of standards thrown in. It was a small section that people really enjoyed so much that several years later I developed her into a whole 50 minute act. She became the first act and then in the second act, I come out as myself and sing my version of Christmas songs, with anecdotes and audience interaction. And SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! was born.

Read our interview with her below!

First of all, congratulations on your win at the NYTVF and ITV Fest! Tell us about about your web series, That’s My DJ, and how the show came together.

Thank you so much! That’s My DJ is a series more or less based off my life and experiences being a DJ in Toronto. Each season follows a different character in the social circle of raves, promoters & night life. Started writing the show about three to four years ago and shot Season One. After a great response from the first season I jumped back into the creating chair and started hustling on Seasons Two and Three.

Interview: Roseanne Supernault Talks Northlander and Diversity in Media

roseannes-1870

We spoke to actress, Roseanne Supernault, about her upcoming movie, The Northlander which explores Indigenous culture in a dystopian and science fiction world. She is a strong voice for representation in media and also works with youth as a facilitator for suicide prevention. After reading this interview, I think you’ll agree with us that Roseanne is a real life Wonder Woman!

I watched the trailer for The Northlander and I am pretty excited about this film! I’ve watched fantasy and science fiction shows for years and I always think it’s worth discussing that a lot of them are still lacking representation. I think it’s great that The Northlander explores a different perspective through Aboriginal characters. Please tell our readers about it and about the character that you play.

The Northlander is a Dystopic Adventure Sci-Fi that takes the main character on a mission for his people and along the way he meets my character Mari, a Huntress. Both of us are searching for identity and belonging, and in the midst of it all become entangled with the nefarious and nomadic Heratics who seem to want something from both of us…
