Breaking News! BubblePunch! Amano! Cosplay!

My favorite people at Bubble Punch are going to be hosting a cosplay contest at the opening night of Yoshitaka Amano's show, 'Deva Loka', at LeBasse Projects. I'm pretty sure most of you anime and Final Fantasy geeks would know who he is. If you don't know who he is... google is your friend.

Seriously though, his art is pretty phenomenal.

For the cosplayers, you guys better check out the contest and prize details! BRING ON THE FLOWING FABRIC AND BEADS!!!

Early Halloween Celebration!

First of all, sorry that the website is looking a little strange right now. I'm in the midst of moving and redesigning the front page around, so things are gonna be funky for awhile! But I'll try to keep the blog as readable as possible, at least. Ha!

We celebrated Halloween a little early at work and had a Halloween Karaoke competition at Backstage Bar & Grill! I highly recommend this karaoke bar. Their song list is a 50 pound book, the drinks are good and they have REALLY good food!

I love their garlic fries...

I went as a witch to work-- well, a lame attempt at a "Cute Witch" costume, at least. The outfit was pulled together from my closet, but I actually made the hat out of posterboard and fabric, all pieced together with a hot glue gun. Skills, man... skills.

DIY: Witch hat!

We had a costume contest, too, but I lost to a dog. That's okay, though... the dog really is cuter than me.

It's that time again...

It's this weekend already! The mecca of comic book geeks alike! Comic-Con in San Diego!

Once again, Nancy and I will BOTH be attending the convention, armed with our own agenda and schedule of panels we would like to see. I really hope I can get into at least a couple of awesome panels this year. Of course, I hope to meet cool and talented people too.

Full report will come after the weekend, but for now, I leave you with these awesome photos taken by Andrew Yoon, and posted on the Zippercut website. Thanks, guys!

Another Anime Expo

Anime Expo 2009

I had no great desire to attend Anime Expo this year because of fading interest of the whole cosplay and fandom scene. Also, 90% of anime convention attendees challenges my patience on many-a-levels and the lack of dignity from a lot of these kids just makes me throw up in my mouth a little mostly...! The cosplay scene, in my opinion, has deteriorated save for a handful of cosplayers who still make a good effort and have it show.

Then again, this could just be the blatter of a bitter, older, ex-cosplayer who just can't relate to the new generation of convention goers... either way, I can't deal with the random "glomping", non-sensical screaming and those fucking YAOI paddles-- honestly, people truly need to get BEATEN with those things. Why do people feel the need to drop common social courtesy inside an anime convention? It's a mystery!

I can go on and on about this really.

Now for the true convention report. I felt more relaxed without the hassle of cosplaying and my main purpose at the convention was to check out the artist alley. A couple of my friends had tables, including my family who owns Fuzz Academy! I worked at the Funimation booth for three hours on Friday, and again on Sunday. I showed up briefly on Saturday to deliver black socks for my friend's cosplay (I'm a good friend, dammit)

Start 'em young! So cute!

I did mostly a lot of walking around taking photos of cosplayers I liked. I poked at the Exhibit Hall booths but ended up buying nothing; though the temptation to buy a pink or yellow PSP almost got me at one point... I ended up buying three prints at Artist Alley from three artists that really stood out for me. I'm pretty impressed with this new wave of artist alleys at convention, having it become MORE than just artists taking commissions at their tables. There are all kinds of merchandise on sale these days. I fear everything gets a little bit muddled as each table seem to offer the same "chibi" keychains over and over again. But, I am glad I found three really beautiful art prints that will hang on my walls some day!

The more exciting event for me was when my friend and I accidentally stumbled upon the autograph area for the cast of Power Rangers. Lucky for us, the original actor for the Black Ranger was there! He was an incredibly nice guy and he hasn't aged a year!

Marie with the original black power ranger!
Marie and Walter Jones who played "Zack" in the original series!

Overall, the convention is not as special as it used to be for me. I'm sure it still is for many of the younger generation and for those who still dedicate themselves to convention attendance and cosplay. I can't say it's not cool to have a place for like-minded geeks to get together, right?

On another note, this is the first time I've gotten sick after a convention! Which is ironic since I took it easy this year too. I had stupidly posed in thin costumes in snow and yet it's the Los Angeles summer that eventually got me!

Going ons, going ons!

The SoCal Cosplay Gathering is happening this Saturday, May 9, in Irvine, California! The event is put together by some wonderful people who will make sure you will have fun hanging out in a park in your costumes!

If you love fun and cosplay, this is definitely the event for you to go this weekend. For $10, you get food, friends, games, and cosplay. That's better than any ol' convention can offer.

I am not a big part of the scene anymore, so I am not sure if I will go myself-- but I have no problem pimping this event to the world because it's pretty awesome. If I do end up going, see you there!

Otherwise, nothing else going on in my local geekery realm. I haven't seen the new Wolverine movie yet. I want to see it for Dominic Monaghan; but I still hate the choice they made for Gambit. That actor does not do him justice. Yes. I am totally judging him before I even see the movie like a giant, fat jerk-face. Sorry, dude, but when it comes to Gambit... I'm not messing around.

I've never been a Trekkie and I'm barely familiar with the Star Trek universe, but... seriously looking forward to the new movie. It just looks damn cool!!! The cast looks very promising-- and it's not George Lucas directing! (Ohhhh... so went there!)

Not so sure when I'll get the chance to see these movies though. I tend to drive solo in movie theaters these days, but the hard part is finding the time to be a movie-goer-loner.

Whoops, have to deal with some work "crisis"(-es?). Will possibly blog more later!

Jab Strong... FIERCE!

Jab Strong Fierce @ gallery nucleus
Me as Sakura!

This past Saturday night, April 25, Gallery Nucleus hosted an opening party for the Street Fighter tribute art show, JAB STRONG FIERCE! It was a really cool event, albeit a very crowded one.

My boyfriend, my friend, and I went in costume-- obviously, I cosplayed Sakura. My friend Valerie cosplayed Chun Li and my boyfriend went as Fei Long... I mainly did it because I wanted to get a 15% discount on a couple of archival prints I've been meaning to purchase from the gallery. Mwahaha. I am now a proud owner of Becky Cloonan's "Lee" and Scott Campbell's "Tree Spirit with Bike"!

I also meant to take more photos of cosplayers and such at the event; but since I was in costume myself, it was hard for me to balance the cosplayer/photographer game. Which is pretty lame... but at some point, I'll have to figure out how to downplay the cosplay (on the rare occasions I dress up in public these days) while getting good shots!

My boyfriend even won second place in the cosplay competition they hosted that night! He won a shirt, an art print, and a copy of the Street Figther tribute book published by Udon Entertainment.

The art at the show was really cool though and a lot of them I loved. Unfortunately, I don't really do well in incredibly crowded, small spaces so I didn't get to enjoy the pieces as I would have liked to. Still, I manage to snap a shot with Cloonan's painting, so that made me happy!

I'm pretty sure I missed out on a lot of cooler things at the opening though. It was hard for me to navigate because of the tight crowd... either way, I'm glad I went. The show will be up till May 11, so go check it out!

A B O U T - U S

we are purtiful

We are self-proclaimed girl-GEEKS who needed a place to write about it! We don't really do anything special with our lives, but we do enjoy the occasional comic book or fantasy film. Also, the occasional pie. With ice cream. Yeah. Ice cream.
