INTERVIEW: Jessica Rose On the Vulnerability in Acting and Her Short Film, ‘Alison’

Jessica Rose is a creative powerhouse and you may recognize her from television shows such as Man Seeking Woman and Saving Hope. She has also written and starred in her own short film called Alison which explores the intimacy between a couple during one particular strange night. Read more below to find out what acting means to her and her upcoming projects.

Your short film, ‘Alison,’ is so simple yet conveys so much about a relationship in one single night. I love how the short started out a bit silly then the emotional roller coaster escalates. What was the inspiration for it and what did you hope to show people?

Thank you! I think relationships are a subject that have always fascinated me. There is a specific kind of intimacy you develop in long term relationships that I hadn’t seen on screen before, and a particular kind of work involved that isn’t often talked about. There is a vulnerability, sometimes a very dark side, that we share with our partners that no one else sees. I know many couples who appear to always be fighting or dealing with some sort of drama, but they remain extremely determined and committed to staying together. Love is complicated, and our need for intimacy and partnership is powerful. I’m fascinated by the equation behind it: what and how much we are willing to endure in order to keep a relationship going, and whether the rewards of companionship outweigh the challenges.

A Geeky Wedding Tutorial by Stephanie Pacheco

I’ve learned a lot of things within the last nine months about the ups and downs of planning a wedding, and trying to make it unique to you. Nowadays it’s a lot easier, and more common place to hear about newlyweds creating their own geeky wedding. Which is great! However, there are also a lot of unforeseen complications with friends and family reacting to your…personal style. These are just a few tips, and personal observations, from a geeky lady who never thought she would have to plan a wedding.

PREFACE

For the record, my fiance and I love both of our families. Second, we are poor as sh*%, and don’t really have funds to help pay for a wedding. Third, our families have been amazingly supportive and offered to help create the wedding our dreams. They just didn’t know it would involve no real flowers, DIY decorations, dyed hair, tattoos, and non-uniformed wedding decorations. No pastels?! Gasp! When the parents heard our wedding colors were red and black they looked like someone stole their favorite toy. His mother is still trying to convince me that real flowers for the bride are just appropriate. Did I mention we’re making paper roses out of several different types of paper products?  Including my bouquet? Amazing, right? Not to the Mom’s. In the beginning my fiance and I came up with a few creative ideas for our wedding like a Steam Punk theme or a cute video game themed wedding cake. Who doesn’t want a Super Mario wedding cake?! Not to the Mom’s. Which brings me to my number one rule…

GEEK LIFE: Summer is Almost Over, the Sun Ain’t So Bad

An excuse to put a photo of JGL on the website.

Summer 2012 is winding down, can you believe it? Earlier this month, I said I can’t believe it’s August already… and now the month is over! There are plenty of blogs out there putting out a list of things-to-do before the summer ends. I figured, I’ll put my own personal spin on a list to share with my fellow Lady and Non-Lady Geeks. So, what should you do before the summer is over? Here are a few ideas.

1: Catch up with Television. The new Fall Season is going to premiere very soon and you’ll be that much more behind with shows. Time to catch up. I am personally trying to finish The Vampire Diaries season 3 and I really should go ahead and watch the last few episodes of Supernatural. I’m a bad fan (sad face).

2: Watch Premium Rush. Josepth Gordon-Levitt movies… enough said.
