The Geekie Awards 2014 aka Dinos and Pizzas and Friendship.

Holy cow. The Geekie Awards were pretty dang fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Now in their second year, The Geekie Awards, or “The Geekies” as most people call it, is a celebration of independent nerd-dom, with categories such as “Geek of the Year”, “Best Cosplay,” and “Best Comics & Graphic Novel.” Hosted at the beautiful Avalon theater space, this event was classy, nerdy, and full of weird little surprises. (And yes, that is an Iron Throne made out of Gibson guitars up top.)

SDCC2014 Party Recap: PARTY WOLF EVOLUTION. ALL HAIL THE PARTY TIGER

Having just finished nursing a week-long hangover from San Diego Comic Con, I feel it is my duty to report upon the wild Party Wolf life that we had been boasting about pre-SDCC. So here it is, the round up of Party Wolf adventures 2014.. or… “How I felt like my body was physically dying, but I kept on anyhow… FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.” I’d like to start by saying, DESPITE HOW IT LOOKS, we are all into just hanging out with our friends, and looking for a good time to meet other like minded people. Of course it’s always nice to be surprised by a celebrity sighting and cool swag, but if this Comic Con has done anything, it has only reinforced the fact that no matter HOW SWANK DA CLUB MIGHT BE, if your homies aren’t there, you’re gonna end up bailing to go find them and have good times somewhere else. The party wolf went through a pokemon-sort of evolution and became… THE PARTY TIGER. LOYAL TO HER PRIDE/CLAN WHATEVER. ROARRRR.

This was me at Comic Con. Well, the tiger head was actually a backpack. And it got a lot of attention--some good, some bad, haha.

A video to play in the background as you read on, haha.

E3 2014: Party Like It’s 00110001 00111001 00111001 00111001

(Psst. That’s binary for “1999” in case you were wondering)

Every year, E3 comes and goes, and those of us who love video games, pray to the game gods that we can get in to the damn thing one day. However, for all those aspiring to rub elbows with the top game developers, there is still that glimmer of hope we like to call… ALL THE E3 PARTIES.

There are. SO. MANY. E3. PARTIES. Every year! And a TON of them are open to the public! We checked out a few shindigs on day 1 and 2 of E3 so we thought we would share the wealth with you all…

Tuesday, June 12, we were able to attend the super-hyped Twitch / Bootie mashup party at Exchange LA thanks to some VIP networking from our friend Jenny. Bootie LA is a super fun mash up music night at the Echoplex, that teamed up with Twitch this year to throw one of the fanciest parties of the year. The venue was rad,  the red velvet roped VIP areas were luxurious, and the booze was flowing. There was even flying confetti and dancers trailing out of the ceiling at the end of the night!

Sailor Moon Crystal Trailer: Dissecting our Otaku Youth.. and the Trailer

Praise be to the moon god. IT’S FINALLY HERE! Today, fans of Sailor Moon got their first look at the new anime, “Sailor Moon Crystal,” the reboot of the entire franchise, which begins airing July 5th.

5Title

Of course, when a cherished, nostalgic, and altogether life-changing anime gets redone, there’s gonna be a couple of squeaky wheels.  Let’s face it: long time fans of the franchise have TWENTY YEARS of nerd feels about Sailor Moon! We all have memories of how it shaped what we thought anime was, or how it changed our lives. Hell, my username since I was 13 has been “IAMCHUBBYBUNNY” specifically because I identified with Usagi’s clumsiness and was so in love with Sailor Moon. (Spoiler: I’m 32 now so that’s a realllllyyyy long freaking time to stick with a name as silly as that!)

“Gotham Bunnies” Cosplay Brings Arkham Villains to Life

Who doesn’t love a little Gotham villainy in their day? YumeNinja and Chubby Bunny (newest faces at Defective Geeks!) are a part of this awesomely evil round up of Batman’s foes in this Playboy Bunny-themed cosplay photoshoot! The same team that was behind the  Sailor Moon Biker Gang Cosplay has brought together yet another all-star group of cosplayers for Gotham Bunnies, inspired by the art of Milkydayy (Oskar Vega) and photographed again by Greg DeStefano.

X-Men at Wondercon

Everyone loves the 90s, that much is obvious from the influx of 90s clothing coming back into style right now, but MAN oh man it’s a great time to COSPLAY from the 90s, too!

Who doesn’t remember the corny 90s  X-Men cartoon? We could all hum that opening theme song on command! Inspired by our love for this cheesy rendition of our most beloved X-Men, we dressed up for Wondercon this year to show our love!

Sweet Streets LA 2011: Chubby Bunny x SPANK! Fashion Collaboration

Sweet Streets LA is one of my favorite annual art show – it’s always fun and always colorful. As usual, Hi Hi Caro and Bubble Punch put the entire event together and this year it was held in downtown Culver City at the WWA Gallery. This gallery proved too small for the event and there was a long line of attendees that waited to get in throughout the night. People stayed even when it rained!

Michelle Nguyen of Chubby Bunny and Tavuchi from SPANK! also debuted their fashion collaboration with a fashion show and a pop up store that sold all sorts of super-cute accessories and clothing. SPANK! is a popular clothing line in Harajuku, Japan which embraces the ‘kawaii’ nature of Harajuku fashion.

The fashion show was a lot of fun with upbeat music and energetic models wearing Chubby Bunny and SPANK! accessories and clothing. I ended up buying two new bows to add to my “Chubby Bunny Collection.” You can buy these items from Chubby Bunny at her website!

This year, Sailor Mizz attended the event with me and we captured the event on video, including all of the fashion how! Hope you enjoy what I put together below.

Bunnies & Bow, an art and fashion show opening night

Bunnies & Bows!

The opening night for Bunnies & Bows on May 7 came and went but it was truly a fun night. With my boyfriend, Taglebot, in tow, we arrived at Japan LA early because Michelle had asked me to do a little chalk doodle infront of the store. I awarded myself with a sushi “burrito” from the Jogasaki food truck who served dinner to the party goers for the rest of the night. We joined the party inside the store again after we ate and I started to take photos.

I was thrilled to see my art piece up on the wall with all the other wonderful work of art from talented and established artists. I never imagined my first official art show (that wasn’t school related) would be so much fun and just plain out cool. Gizzy came out to show her support, hooray! As well as my friend Rachael from Glass of Win, Jess from LOVEKILLER.net, Onch from Onch Movement, Shrinkle of Sugarpill and all our local friends, Ryan, Shaun, Shane, Edith, Lena, Jeremy, Greg, Tim, Callie (sorry if I missed a particular person on this shout-out, you are welcome to yell at me if I do)… thank you all so much to everyone that parties with us! Thank you to my wonderful boyfriend for staying the whole night and going home as tired and as happy as I was!

Bunnies & Bows!

Michelle (Chubby Bunny and our great event hostess) even asked me to help judge the costume contest. I was glad we had several judges that voted because picking the winners was hard. Everyone came out in their best bunnies and bows. You can watch the video from the contest after the jump below.

I spent most of the night talking to friends, shopping inside Japan LA— soooo hard to resist buying anything inside there– including a couple of Michelle’s new bows and pigging out on Lil Rae’s cake balls. Delicious! The art will be showcased inside Japan LA until May 29, so stop by if you missed the opening night. All the pieces are for sale for all of you art collectors out there. If you happen to swing by there, please let me know what you think!

A lot of my photos will be on the LA Weekly website, which I will post once they are up. Continue reading
