Labyrinth of Jareth Brings a Fantasy Realm to the Millennium Biltmore

Labyrinth of Jareth brings the fantasy realm of the movie of the same name to guests every year, by providing a lavish setting to dress up in your whimsical best in a beautiful venue, with performances, merchants, dancing, music, and more available to create a night to remember. We are so grateful to Sypher Arts Studio, who puts on this annual event, and giving all of us nerds a chance to dress up and have the chance to experience such an amazing event!

This year, Labyrinth made a last minute venue change to the historic Millennium Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The hotel is an architectural treat in itself, having been erected in the 1920s in a mix of  Spanish-Italian Renaissance Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Beaux Arts styles. The hotel also played host to the origins of the Academy awards, hosting the Oscars in its early years.

With this historic change in venue, Labyrinth was an even greater treat than usual for patrons this year, as guests could explore 3 floors of rooms providing different musical, dance, and other various stage entertainment. On the main stage in particular, dancers and musicians spun a fantasy tale told through a sequence of performances all night, culminating in an epic all-cast finale that even included Sparkles, the dragon!

We are so grateful to be fantasy nerds in a town like Los Angeles, where other like-minded artists can come together and experience such a magical night every year.

Below are some of our photos from the night, but they barely scratch the surface of this amazing masquerade ball. We can’t wait for next year!

FEMM Brings Mannequins to Life with Music at Club Rage

On August 7th, Japanese pop performance band FEMM (short for “Far East Mention Mannequins”) made their Los Angeles debut at Club Rage in West Hollywood courtesy of GAMeBoi and Tune in Tokyo , providing fans with a unique take on high concept pop music.

Their official website states that the two latex-clad mannequins-turned pop stars, RiRi and LuLa, are here to stand up for mannequins’ rights, and recruit their fans to join the FEMM Agency Syndicate, a fictional organization that helps free mannequins from their hum drum lives.

Their stop-motion-esque  choreography, created by the Hidali group, translated amazingly from their high production music videos to the live stage. You can check out highlights from their set here, courtesy of Super Attacku, as well as some snaps we got of the crowd!

More photos of the event after the jump!

The Marvel Experience

THE MARVEL EXPERIENCE

On Valentine’s Day, I made my way to the Marvel Experience while it was at Del Mar, California. This comic book geek playground consists of 7 domes, the largest one hosting several character inspired “training” stations. Most of it were video game stimulators, like learning how to fly like Iron Man or smashing robots as the Incredible Hulk. There are two stations that were more physical — the Spider-Man wall climber and the Black Widow agility test.

This past Monday, we celebrated another Gal-entine’s Day in Los Angeles with our fellow local lady geeks. Gal-entine’s is the celebration of female friendship started by Chubby Bunny and this is her fifth year hosting the event. What started as an excuse to dress up with a small group of our friends turned into a party that women look forward to. It’s really cool to see everyone get together and celebrate the fact that we’re girls.
