Asian American ComiCon in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles 2017

Asian American ComiCon was one of the best conventions I’ve been to in awhile, possibly a new favorite of mine. When I planned to attend the convention, I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew there were a couple of interesting panels I wanted to see and George Takei will be there. Definitely enough of an incentive to go, especially just to show support to fellow Asian-American creators and the community.

The afternoon turned out to be one of the more memorable and inspiring day I’ve had as a creative person and as an Asian woman.

SDCC 2017: Don’t Have A Badge?

San Diego Comic-Con is an annual heart breaker for a lot of geeks. The convention grows bigger each year but there is a limited amount of badges available for purchase to the public. Tears are wept, blood is shed, as thousands attempt to get their hands on these precious SDCC passes only to be denied. IT IS A CRUEL GAME FOR OUR FRAGILE HEARTS.

Fortunately, all is not despair, because there are plenty of non-badge activities outside of the convention center. Year after year, downtown San Diego gets filled up to the brim with plenty of fun stuff. Here are a few I am looking forward to.

Amazon Prime + The Tick

Amazon is bringing it this year with a multi-room replica of The Tick’s warehouse across the street from the convention center. No details yet on what will be inside this replica but it’s The Tick so it’s probably going to be pretty fun. Amazon will also have a lounge for Prime Members on the corner of 1st and J Street which will also be Tick themed and you can watch a screening of the pilot.

These lounges are always great for a break from the heat.

Find Your D’Arcy & Live Your Regency Dreams: The Jane Austen Evening

As a rabid Jane-ite, one who considers themselves an expert in all things Jane Austen, I was pleased as a Regency spiked punch to be able to attend the Jane Austen Evening this year, which is held annually at the Pasadena Masonic Lodge by the Society for Manners and Merriment.

The event consistently sells out within minutes online, with lucky patrons being able to choose between just the dance ticket, or combining it with a sit down tea service beforehand. Although the demand for tickets continues to grow, the Society for Manners and Merriment insists on keeping the venue and the size that it is, to ensure a unique, intimate, and carefully crafted event for its patrons.
If you are curious about this event, but wonder what to wear, worry not! Even though there is often a plethora of beautiful regency garments worn by attendees, the ball also welcomes those without timeline appropriate attire to simply wear formal dress clothes.
Step into the world of Jane Austen, and check out some of the beautiful garments, dances, and decor of this wonderful event!

The team over at Geek Fashion Week hosted their first ever week of events last week, ranging from online style discussions, happy hour meetups, and culminating in an event put on by the Geek Fashion Show this past Saturday,  at Vanaheim Studios.

Wrapping It Up in 2014: Year in Review

2014yearinreview

Defective Geeks has survived (kind of, sort of?) another year of random geek shenanigans and once again, I wanted to highlight some of our accomplishments. This year was a bit more mellow than 2013 was but we got to experiment with bringing new content to the website with the help of friends. I would like to thank everyone who has stopped by to read a blog, watch a video or simply stumbled upon a photo on a post that they really liked (I see those tweets go out!).

For the people who have always supported us, especially those who remind us all the time that we are loved… THANK YOU!

Now let’s get on with our year in review.

BECOME THE PARTY WOLF: SDCC2014 List of Where to Get Crunk Like a Nerd Rock Star

There are three types of San Diego Comic Con attendees:

1. Pokemon Masters:  “I GOTTA CATCH ALL OF THE RARE POKEYMANS/LIMITED GOODS/ COLLECTIBLE ITEMS!!” You’ll see these fine folk lined up in the convention hall awaiting their preciousssss. They probably don’t talk in ALL CAPS but.. they’re THINKING IN ALL CAPS.

2. Die Hards (aka Bruce Willys): “I must attend all pertinent panels, meetings signings, and appearances of the show/series/comic/subculture that I am into. Otherwise, I CANNOT CALL MYSELF A TRUE FAN.”

3. Party Wolves: “Where. Da. Party. At.” Yeah, we sort of care about the other stuff, but mostly we wanna party with our nerdy selves.

Although we here at Defective Geeks are an equal mix of all of these types of nerdy personas, this post will focus on the most obscure of the three… LOS PARTY LOBOS EXTREMOS.

Comic Con is all about fandoms, but it’s also about getting to party with your best nerd pals, and hopefully scoring some free refreshment all while rubbing elbows with celebrities from the series/title/films/books you love. While the list below certainly isn’t comprehensive, it’s definitely refined down to the ones you can actually expect to get into with a wee bit of effort! Remember to pace yourselves, party animals. Thursday has the most parties, and Saturday the least, which means the chances of you maxing out and tossing cookies before the week really gets started are high! BEWARE THE PARTY FOUL. Party responsibly, and bring water with you EVERYWHERE.

And if you wanna know where WE are during the con, we will be all over social media shenanigans, party info, and embarrassing photos:
