Having just finished nursing a week-long hangover from San Diego Comic Con, I feel it is my duty to report upon the wild Party Wolf life that we had been boasting about pre-SDCC. So here it is, the round up of Party Wolf adventures 2014.. or… “How I felt like my body was physically dying, but I kept on anyhow… FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.” I’d like to start by saying, DESPITE HOW IT LOOKS, we are all into just hanging out with our friends, and looking for a good time to meet other like minded people. Of course it’s always nice to be surprised by a celebrity sighting and cool swag, but if this Comic Con has done anything, it has only reinforced the fact that no matter HOW SWANK DA CLUB MIGHT BE, if your homies aren’t there, you’re gonna end up bailing to go find them and have good times somewhere else. The party wolf went through a pokemon-sort of evolution and became… THE PARTY TIGER. LOYAL TO HER PRIDE/CLAN WHATEVER. ROARRRR.
There are three types of San Diego Comic Con attendees:
1. Pokemon Masters: “I GOTTA CATCH ALL OF THE RARE POKEYMANS/LIMITED GOODS/ COLLECTIBLE ITEMS!!” You’ll see these fine folk lined up in the convention hall awaiting their preciousssss. They probably don’t talk in ALL CAPS but.. they’re THINKING IN ALL CAPS.
2. Die Hards (aka Bruce Willys): “I must attend all pertinent panels, meetings signings, and appearances of the show/series/comic/subculture that I am into. Otherwise, I CANNOT CALL MYSELF A TRUE FAN.”
3. Party Wolves: “Where. Da. Party. At.” Yeah, we sort of care about the other stuff, but mostly we wanna party with our nerdy selves.
Although we here at Defective Geeks are an equal mix of all of these types of nerdy personas, this post will focus on the most obscure of the three… LOS PARTY LOBOS EXTREMOS.
Comic Con is all about fandoms, but it’s also about getting to party with your best nerd pals, and hopefully scoring some free refreshment all while rubbing elbows with celebrities from the series/title/films/books you love. While the list below certainly isn’t comprehensive, it’s definitely refined down to the ones you can actually expect to get into with a wee bit of effort! Remember to pace yourselves, party animals. Thursday has the most parties, and Saturday the least, which means the chances of you maxing out and tossing cookies before the week really gets started are high! BEWARE THE PARTY FOUL. Party responsibly, and bring water with you EVERYWHERE.
And if you wanna know where WE are during the con, we will be all over social media shenanigans, party info, and embarrassing photos:
Party hardy list after the jump!
We debut our newest segment, ‘Geekheroes’, which brings up another discussion on white-washed Hollywood movies. The Space Pirate Queen wants to marry Felicia Day. Fanfic Theatre: Twilight (???).
This year, Geek & Sundry won my favorite SDCC 2013 lounge picks. I only got to stop by briefly with Gizzy B but we had a pretty good time anyways. We abused the photo booth and the cardboard cut-out of Wil Wheaton (pictures below). Despite the fact that it was a Friday afternoon, the lounge wasn’t too crowded at all. I love that you can actually sit down and watch people play tabletop games all day long.
Geeks. Nerds. Dorks.
These are the words that some of us have chosen to identify with. Geek is the new cool, geek is the new chic and we can now say it loud and proud. I’m the One That’s Cool is the new music video from The Guild and it depicts each cast member as a caricature of nerds getting picked on by the mean kids. The song is fun, catchy and Felicia Day is always so… well, cool! I can also fully relate to Amy Okuda as an awkward, Asian dork.
I went to public school for one year during my Freshman year. The worst that happened to me was I had one of the stupid boys in my Spanish class bump me with his ass against my desk on purpose. He also used to turn around and “mock” my long hair by singing the Maybelline commercial (maybe she’s born with it…). He was dumb and immature — in a weird way, I think he was trying to flirt more than bully me. Who knows. High school students remain a mystery to me then and especially now.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scarlett and I am an honor roll making, JK Rowling worshipping, wand carrying, nerd t-shirt and slacks with Converse wearing, book reading, WoW playing,Wizard Wrock listening, geek blog following, comic book hoarding, fangirl squeeing, Facebook loving, convention attending, antique collecting, bookshelf breaking, recycle bag using, list making, non-stop talking, gummy worm eating, The Guild watching spoiled nerdfighter ex-cheerleader :D haha That last part probably has you a bit confused. So, please, allow me to explain.
Point 1: In junior high and high school, I DID make the Honor Roll. I was in Future Scholars of America and made the Dean’s List my senior year. I started cheerleading pop warner at my aunt and uncle’s request (meaning they paid) and in 10th grade, I cheered for my school. This made it easy for me to have nerd and non-nerd friends alike and integrate them as much as possible and have some people actully thinking I’m cool. Awesome
Point 2: JK Rowling is like a GODDESS to me! Harry Potter has pretty much taken over my entire life. I went to LeakyCon in July, bought a wand, went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and got chosen at Ollivander’s!! I’m a self-proclaimed Gryffindor and when I talk, it usually has some sort of HP reference. Example: I wish I could go visit Ashley today. It sucks that I’m out of Floo Powder!!
I got a big surprise this morning when I checked my e-mail and saw that I am today’s spotlight on Fan Friday on The Guild’s official website. I had the biggest, nerd-attack ever! AHHH! This is so cool that I can’t even begin to say how cool it is.
Favorite line:Â “And like a true geek, she went all out, including screen captures of where you can spot her in the episodes.” (Darn right, I did!)
A few months ago, The Guild announced on Facebook that they were looking for extras for season five. Lucky for me, not only did my schedule work out but they were also filming in my neighborhood and at a convention I had already planned to go to (Long Beach Comic Convention). Ya-hoo! A chance to stare creepily at my girl-crush, Felicia Day, on set!… I mean… um, a chance to experience something new on The Guild set and meet awesome people!
The big episode came out last week and to my geek-delight, my friends started sending me messages saying they’ve spotted me.
