If you are a fan of vampires, witches, werewolves, or even Angels then you are most likely a fan of Anne Rice. However, very few of the adventurous readers I know have gotten around to “The Sleeping Beauty” series that was originally published under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure back in the 1980’s before she was a seasoned writer. I came across Rice’s stories while in high school and slowly made my way through her catalog of books during the late 1990’s. To my surprise no one I knew had heard of these books. I soon realized this was not a story meant for a younger audience, but like the main character aptly named Beauty, a literary sexual awakening was sitting in my lap! I didn’t really know what the meaning of phallus was, but I was soon introduced to a plethora of sexual terminology that has had me intrigued for years to come. Fans of erotica know “50 Shades of Grey” is nothing compared to this erotica series. Why read about a billionaire sociopath when you can read about a whole kingdom dedicated to sexual foreplay and eroticism? A WHOLE KINGDOM PEEPS! There is even a village outside the kingdom that tributes, such as Beauty, are sent to when people are punished for not being subservient. It sounds crazy! Crazy awesome.
Champion by Marie Lu was released early November 5, 2013 and the author ended her book tour at the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore in Redondo Beach. The back of the bookstore was crowded with fans by the time I arrived, many of them were young girls with their moms (well, there were boys too!). The event started with Marie talking about her writing methods and afterwards, she took (non-spoiler-y) questions from her readers. As usual, her fans were very curious and enthusiastic with lots of interesting questions for the author!
I’m going to start off by saying I’m already a big fan of Ilona Andrews (pen name for husband and wife writing team). I’ve been following their Kate Daniels series for years and dip into their other writings from time to time.
What I love most about their writing, and the biggest strength of Clean Sweep, is their world building. They come up with really interesting ideas and build really strong, realistic worlds. As realistic as you can be with magic, werewolves, and vampires.
The Lady Geeks discuss the character trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl in movies and fiction and how they relate to it in the real world. . . or if it even applies in the real world. They go deep into their opinions and insights about the meaning of the character and speculate on what it means for men and gender roles in the modern world. Fanfic Theater: More Batman x Robocop.
