INTERVIEW: Michael Antonakos Stars as Alexios in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey

Born in Athens, Greece and raised in Lake Louise, Alberta, actor Michael Antonakos is the voice of Alexios in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey, the latest game in the blockbuster series released last month. From theater, to film and television, to voice acting and motion capture– Michael has done it all! His voice can also be heard in Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, Dead Rising 4, Mass Effect Andromeda and many more. Read about his journey into acting below.

Hi Micheal, thank you for doing this interview with Defective Geeks! Tell us about Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey and your character, Alexios. What is it like being the voice of a video game franchise that so many people love?

You’re very welcome! Thank you for chatting with me.

Well, it’s a hell of a game to say the least. It all takes place in Ancient Greece around 431BCE, the beginning of Western Civilization, and the height of the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta. You (the player) get choose to be a male (Alexios) or female (Kasandra), a mercenary (Ancient Greek: misthios) who can fight for both sides, while on a quest to unite their family and uncover a malign cult called the Order of The Ancients.

It was pretty cool to be a part of this incredible franchise. It comes with a lot of weight to it, but I’ve been very honored to be a part of such a massive game.

#WomenAreTooHardToAnimate – Nobody is Buying it, Ubisoft

If you’re just joining the conversation, here’s what you missed: Earlier this week, Ubisoft unveiled the latest installment of their unstoppable franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The story takes place during the French Revolution, and players can choose from up to four unique characters–

Alright, not so unique, then.

The fact that Ubisoft chose to omit women in their game without bothering to Google the most famous assassin of the time period is bad enough, but then they made matters worse by trying to explain why.

Basically, it was too much work. … Except not really. In fact, it’s safe to say that excuse is complete bullshit and Ubisoft has no good reason for not including a female assassin in their game.

In response to Ubisoft’s statements, @lionschmion started the Twitter hashtag #WomenAreTooHardToAnimate. In less than 24 hours, there have been thousands of tweets with the hashtag, with a reach of over 1.2 million users. Oh, and Kotaku has just now picked up on it (damn, got there before me).

Jayd (aka lionschmion) was kind enough to pretend to take me seriously long enough to do this interview. We talked about the decline of the Assassin’s Creed series, the overwhelming response to #WomenAreTooHardToAnimate, and what it means for the future of gaming.

March Madness Birthdays - 82

Old school arcades are a rare find these days (Dave and Busters does not count) which is why it was a big deal in the Southern California geek world when EightyTwo announced that they were opening a barcade. On their opening weekend, I was invited to a birthday party of a friend’s friend. Normally, I would hide in my cave to avoid social anxiety but this time, I happily accepted the invite so I could waste many quarters!
