Halloween! Knott’s Scary Farm 2013

Knott's Scary Farm 2013

Knott’s Scary Farm Haunt prides itself as one of the first — if not THE first — theme parks to go all out during Halloween in Southern California. They have been around for more than a decade since I remembered my own mother taking me to the park on a Halloween (possibly one of their first years as Knott’s Scary) when I was barely a tween and getting scared to death! When Scarlettburn and I went this year, I had wondered out loud why a parent would agree to take an impressionable child to the park. It wasn’t until I was laughing hysterically at the reactions of a group of kids chaperoned by their own parents inside one of the mazes that I understood why. It’s kind of funny to see terrified children and it’s possibly a nice little revenge for making our parents’ lives a constant hell. . . but everyone has their fun in the end, so why not!

Great Halloween Movies: ‘Hansel & Gretel Get Baked’

It’s the time of year again, kids. It’s time for your Auntie Giselle to tell you even more about some of her favorite Halloween flicks. This year I’m starting off with a new favorite of mine, Hansel and Gretel Get Baked.

Screen shot 2013-10-08 at 2.51.36 PM

Yes, you did read the title correctly. I discovered this movie because Netflix suggested it to me and with a title like that how the hell could I resist? This retelling of the classic fairy tale takes place in modern times in the city of Pasadena. Molly Quinn stars as Gretel, a sweet teenage stoner whose boyfriend goes missing after buying an incredible new strain of weed called Black Forest grown by a little old lady who lives by herself. It turns out that the little old lady, played by Lara Flynn Boyle, is a witch who uses her amazing weed to lure in teenagers so that she can eat them, steal their souls, and become young again. Yes, the plot sounds ridiculous, but what’s fun about Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is that it’s fully aware of how ridiculous it is and has fun with it.

Fives Things Elvira Taught Me

One of the many things I remember fondly from when I was a kid was watching Elvira with my uncle. I’ve always had a penchant for Halloween and anything affiliated with it, so Elvira and her show were like a dream come true for me. When I was eleven years old my uncle took me to Knott’s Scary Farm just so that we could see her live show there. After waiting in line we lucked out and got to sit front row center. The whole time before the show began we were so excited and once she finally appeared and I remember thinking, “Whoa, she’s real.”

To this day we still talk about how much fun we had at that show, and yes my uncle is the coolest guy ever for taking eleven year old Giselle to Knott’s Scary Farm to see Elvira. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be like her. She is gorgeous, hilarious, and has wit to match it. As I’ve gotten older I realize that not only is Elvira generally awesome, but she has taught me some valuable lessons over the years.

Here are the five things that Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, has taught me:

1). If You’ve Got it, Flaunt it

Elvira is not ashamed of her body. She has legs, hair, and a rack to die for and she’ll be damned if you don’t know it. She is proud of her figure and not shy about what nature (or perhaps Satan) has blessed upon her. Ladies, we need to follow suit. Let’s stop being so self-deprecating and ashamed of our figures and instead show the world our incredible assets and be proud of them. Screw shame and let the world know that you are beautiful and that you don’t feel the need to hide it. Embrace yourself!

Halloween is Coming!

It’s the end of August and you know what that means?  It’s time to start getting ready for Halloween!

Pumpkin

Halloween is without a doubt my favorite holiday and always has been. My poor mom thought she was going to have a kid that craved a Norman Rockwell style Christmas with sugar plum fairies, fake snow, and wholesome carols. Instead she got a kid with an obsession with the macabre, dressing up as ghoulish creatures, and a penchant for gutting and carving scary faces into any fruit or squash she got near. Yes, pumpkins are a fruit. Now I love Halloween more than ever and the only thing more fun than that holiday is getting prepared for it.
