SDCC2015: Her Universe Fashion Show Recap

SDCC 2015 // Day 1 — Her Universe Fashion Show

For the second year in a row, Her Universe put on their nerd-inspired fashion show that not only showcases the newest pieces from the Her Universe clothing line, but also gives aspiring designers a chance to show off their geek couture design to compete for a chance to design a Her Universe line for Hot Topic. Last year, Amy Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine won, and have recently collaborated with Her Universe designers to make the vintage-inspired Avengers line.

SDCC2015 Party Recap: TO THE NERDS, GO THE SPOILS

For us, SDCC is always synonymous with the best nerd parties of the year, but my god. AT WHAT PRICE, MY SOUL?

At long last, it’s time for the Party Tiger to lay down her furry mantle and write about the best parties at SDCC. They were good, they were great, they were full of awesome music, and nerdy pride. Thanks to all the amazing friends who stuck with us along the way, and the new ones we made!

(Apologies for the rough audio in the beginning… hang in there for the party vids after it!)

Party Tiger 2.0: SDCC 2015 Party List of Where to Shake Your Nerd Booty

Alright, team.

It’s that time of year, where once again, WE ENTER… THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON PARTY TIGER. The Party Tiger represents the true beast within us all, ready for action, scotch in hand, prepared to take one for the team and convince any doorman that THE TIGER IS ON THE LIST. Above all, Party Tiger is loyal to her friends, no matter what glitzy Hollywood party happens, she is loyal to her pack, and not a ditching digeri dingo! Parties are no fun without friends! So come with us… and EMBRACE YOUR INNER PARTY TIGER for Comic Con!!

This was me at Comic Con. Well, the tiger head was actually a backpack. And it got a lot of attention--some good, some bad, haha.

This was me at Comic Con. Well, the tiger head was actually a backpack. And it got a lot of attention–some good, some bad, haha.

If you remember anything from our post about last year at San Diego Comic Con, it’s that we all owe it to ourselves, our friends, and OUR (lack of) DIGNITY to party until our guts say STAHHP! We had a kick ass time hanging out with nerd personalities, celebs, and, most importantly, our awesome friends last year, and this year is definitely going to be no different… with a little planning! We’ve once again whittled down the list of parties to those that meet our Party Tiger criteria: LOW cost, WON’T be a giant B to get into, and ACTUALLY sounds like fun people will be there!

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Ho hum, maybe I won’t party too hard… I’ve been to SDCC plenty of times…,” THEN WE SAY UNTO YOU… “NAYYYY!”

Now listen up: With the ever increasing scarcity of hotel rooms, I’m sure more than a few of you readers will be stacked like sardines with 8 other people in a 4-person room, your sleeping space sectioned off under a table where you have a small array of snacks and water so you do not die during the night. LOOK, trust us, WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE, and that’s even MORE reason to say FAREWELL to sleep, and commit to being the best Party Tiger you can be.

And if you wanna know where WE are during the con, we will be all over social media , sharing party info, snapping pics of amazing nerds, and probably posting one too many selfies the drunker we get. TALLY HO:

Costume Designers Guild at SDCC 2014

Yes folks, the San Diego Comic Con posts are still forthcoming!

We just HAD to write about one of the best afternoon events we were privileged to attend at SDCC: The CDG (Costume Designers Guild) Mixer! On Friday, July 25th, the CDG local 892 rolled out the red carpet to their members and panelists to celebrate all things costuming at the Marriot Marquis.  The Costume Designers Guild (I.A.T.S.E. Local 892) is the labor union representing costume designers, assistant costume designers and illustrators in film and television.

For those not in the know, this year marked the CDG’s ninth consecutive year participating at SDCC, by offering a slew of panels on costuming and the industry, as well as sponsoring their very own Masquerade prizes and trophy!. This year’s winners were “Giant Monsters All Out Attack,” by Lisa Truong, Lynleigh Sato, Wendy Colon, and Cindy Purchase.

The CDG mixer venue was gorgeous, with our own view of the bay and plenty of food to nosh on!

Another wonderful part of this mixer was the copious amounts of costumes on display on models from various movies! We tried very hard not to feel every costume and freak out their wearers, haha. Alright, enough chit chat. On to the photos!

The Geekie Awards 2014 aka Dinos and Pizzas and Friendship.

Holy cow. The Geekie Awards were pretty dang fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Now in their second year, The Geekie Awards, or “The Geekies” as most people call it, is a celebration of independent nerd-dom, with categories such as “Geek of the Year”, “Best Cosplay,” and “Best Comics & Graphic Novel.” Hosted at the beautiful Avalon theater space, this event was classy, nerdy, and full of weird little surprises. (And yes, that is an Iron Throne made out of Gibson guitars up top.)

BECOME THE PARTY WOLF: SDCC2014 List of Where to Get Crunk Like a Nerd Rock Star

There are three types of San Diego Comic Con attendees:

1. Pokemon Masters:  “I GOTTA CATCH ALL OF THE RARE POKEYMANS/LIMITED GOODS/ COLLECTIBLE ITEMS!!” You’ll see these fine folk lined up in the convention hall awaiting their preciousssss. They probably don’t talk in ALL CAPS but.. they’re THINKING IN ALL CAPS.

2. Die Hards (aka Bruce Willys): “I must attend all pertinent panels, meetings signings, and appearances of the show/series/comic/subculture that I am into. Otherwise, I CANNOT CALL MYSELF A TRUE FAN.”

3. Party Wolves: “Where. Da. Party. At.” Yeah, we sort of care about the other stuff, but mostly we wanna party with our nerdy selves.

Although we here at Defective Geeks are an equal mix of all of these types of nerdy personas, this post will focus on the most obscure of the three… LOS PARTY LOBOS EXTREMOS.

Comic Con is all about fandoms, but it’s also about getting to party with your best nerd pals, and hopefully scoring some free refreshment all while rubbing elbows with celebrities from the series/title/films/books you love. While the list below certainly isn’t comprehensive, it’s definitely refined down to the ones you can actually expect to get into with a wee bit of effort! Remember to pace yourselves, party animals. Thursday has the most parties, and Saturday the least, which means the chances of you maxing out and tossing cookies before the week really gets started are high! BEWARE THE PARTY FOUL. Party responsibly, and bring water with you EVERYWHERE.

And if you wanna know where WE are during the con, we will be all over social media shenanigans, party info, and embarrassing photos:
