Attack on Titan Live Action Movie World Premiere: The actors, the gore, the 3D Maneuver Gear. EMBRACE THE CHANGE

The Attack on Titan franchise has had an incredible history among manga and anime fans, ranging from the popular manga, to the hit animated show, to the 4 spinoff manga series that the franchise has inspired.

Celebrating their world premiere at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood on Tuesday, July 14th, the Attack on Titan live action movie (part one of two, guys!) held a press conference and interviews before their red carpet debut. DefectiveGeeks (well, just me…) came down to the press event to get some answers for us weeaboos. At the press conference was director Shinji Higuchi, producer Yoshihiro Sato, Eren’s actor Haruma Miura (dreamy, quirky, perfect etc etc), and Mikasa’s actress Kiko Mizuhara (beautiful, well-spoken, perfect RBF, etc etc.)

LOVE MAKING! Love has new magical protectors!

boeibu01

Binan Kouko Chikyuu Bouei-Bu LOVE (Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE) or Boei-bu, kicked off the Winter Anime season this week on Crunchyroll, meeting a lot of expectations after releasing their funny teasers last Fall. The show delightfully plays on the mahou shoujo (magical girl) trope, giving nods to iconic shows like Sailor Moon, and the long running Pretty Cure.

Michelle and Will’s Moonlight Wedding: Sailor Moon and Art Deco Inspired

Okay, no laughing allowed. I had a Sailor Moon themed wedding.

But perhaps not the rainbow colored, anime-poster ridden melee of sad artistic choices that you are expecting. Since my groom and I  are fairly fashionable adults with an pretty serious otaku problem, we finally landed on the perfect mash up of classy and nerdy for our big day: We had an art deco Sailor Moon-inspired wedding.

Michelle & Will's Moonlight Wedding: Sailor Moon inspired

The plan was to have an elegant, grown up wedding, with a highly stylized injection of Sailor Moon design into every nook and cranny! Utilizing the extensive archive of beautiful Sailor Moon imagery, such as the lockets, wands, and symbols from the manga and anime, as well as the influence of Art Deco moon and stars designs, pulling together the decor, graphics, and fashion into an elegant nerd wedding was an event planner’s dream! As a professional event producer for Bubble Punch, as well as working in a hotel for most of my college years (100+ wedding receptions and lived to tell the tale!), I had extensive wedding planning and decorating experience under my belt, and was confident I would be able to do something unique, yet totally otaku-driven, to suit our tastes. Keep in mind, despite all of this, it was STILL SUPER DUPER STRESSFUL since it was my own wedding, haha! But here I am, mind in tact, and ready to tell you all about it!

I just wanted to hop on my soapbox quickly and tell everyone that YOU ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY KIND OF WEDDING YOU WANT. I think a lot of readers have been amazed that my groom “allowed” me to do this, but the fact is that we were both equally excited about the theme, the nerdy music, and decorations, because it spoke to our common interests. So don’t be afraid to flaunt your nerdy side in public, and especially not at your wedding! It’s your day! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! WOO!

Below is a summary in photos of the wedding, then after that is a breakdown of Fashion, Graphics, and Decor notes and DIY links for everything! THIS POST IS LONG, BUT HANG IN THERE, IT’S TOTES WORTH IT. Thank you so, so much to Shannon Cottrell for all of the amazing photos!

Play the video and get teary eyed while the magical music plays in the background!

THE WEDDING!

INTERVIEW: Lillian Diaz-Przybyl of Sparkler Magazine

sparklermag-issue04Lillian Diaz-Przybyl is one of the co-founders of Sparkler Magazine, which is a project that I am currently pretty excited about. They have an amazing collection of talents, graphic novels, written fiction and audio dramas under their belt — and all of it need a lot of more love from more readers. Check out our interview with Lillian below and she will tell you all about Sparkler, the work behind it and what’s in store in the future for this unique online publication.

Tell us about Sparkler Magazine’s superhero origin story. Who are the creators? Where did the idea come from and how did it become a reality?

So basically in the mid-90s, all of us got hit by the Anime Bug, and were turned into rabid otaku—I mean. Uh. Actually, that’s kind of what happened… Three out of the four of us founders were Sailor Moon junkies in one way or the other, and after I graduated with a double-degree in nerdery (read: Japanese & English, with a side of running my college’s anime society) I wound up working at TOKYOPOP for several years, where I got to know Lianne as a freelancer (actually, she applied for the same staff job I did—no hard feelings!) and a friend. Lianne and Becca have been friends since middle school, a time during which Lianne describes herself as the local anime pusher, and Jill’s a proud otome gamer and has a real job in the finance industry. We’re lucky to have found her!
