INTERVIEW: The Dread Crew of Oddwood, A Pirate Rock Band

Even though I am the SPACE Pirate Queen, I can still appreciate the music of land pirates. Wolfbeard O’ Brady, the captain of The Dread Crew of Oddwood, took time out of sailing the high seas and making music to answer questions for our blog. Gizzy B and I have seen this band perform a couple of years ago and their fun energy have always made an impression on me. They were out of control, stomping around and played great pirate-y music. Imagine my surprise when one of the band members has been reading our blog all this time! I was happy to do an interview with them. Besides, us pirates have to stick together.

These pirates are not only hot but they make great music. Take a listen on their Facebook.

Where did the name of the band come from? What is the origin story of  The Dread Crew of Oddwood? Tell me more about each of your pirate tales and history.

The Dread Tale of Oddwood begins in 1735, a time of endless bounty and exploration. It’s a long and adventurous epic that tells of how the Dread Crew was brought to the present through temporal rifts in the Atlantic Ocean, and how we started playing our music for American audiences in 2008. While it is too long to recount here in explicit detail, you can read the whole story on our website.

We Are The Music-Makers

I don’t know about you, but I was a musical geek. If I could, I would live my life like a musical in a heartbeat. During my adolescence and teen years, I would often dance around singing about my life and as if it were a musical. I still remember being eleven and coming home from school to pop in my The Little Mermaid VHS and playing Part of Your World over and over just so that I could make sure I hit every note correctly and embracing the emotions the Ariel felt. I want to be part of that world too, Ariel! Me too!! Although, I rarely sang and danced in public, I have to admit, I was a wallflower. I usually sang in the privacy of my own home, even more privately, in my bedroom. Every now and then I would belt out, “WILL YOU PASS ME THE RIIIICE!!!” in vibrato, at my parents, during dinner. Even though my family has a great sense of humor, they’re also Asian, so they would often call me crazy for doing that. As a way to release some of my inner artist, I joined choir. But once again, wallflowers don’t do so well in public. I was only comfortable living my musical life with family and friends, but I have to say that choir did help to break me out of my shell a bit. As I got older, the music faded, although, it remained in my heart and soul.

To live life out like a broadway musical would be any music geek’s ultimate dream come true. Movies from the 50s, old variety shows, Disney’s classic animated feature films, all have brought music, singing and dancing to the masses from beyond the broadway stages. But like many things, during a certain period, mainstream musicals became a thing of the past… However, American culture has a certain soft spot for bringing “fads” back to life. So, like many classics, mainstream musical was once again the new “in thing” like you’re mother’s hippie 70’s dress. If you could turn any movie into a musical, it most likely would happen. Some of them were successes on the broadway stage and others, let’s just say you probably didn’t know it was even made into a musical. Everything is constantly being reinvented and brought to a newer generation to appreciate. That’s how broadway does it, so now the film and television makers are doing the same. One show in particular has come out on top… And no, I’m not talking about High School Musical.

Three years ago, a television show created by Ryan Murphy (Nip/tuck), Brad Falchuk (Nip/tuck), Ian Brennan aired on the FOX network. This show became every music geek’s, including myself, dream  come true. I actually can’t vouch for other music geeks, but I know for me, it has been the best thing to come to primetime! Of course, I’m talking about GLEE!

GLEEK OUT!!

A break

I’m on my lunch break at work currently and I figured I’d spend time updating this often neglected and badly written blog. Ironic that the my fellow bloggers are the better at writing than me… but they are so silent here… ha!

This Friday, I am going to see GLAY for the 2nd time at the House of Blues on Sunset! At my younger years, while my peers were listening to N’Sync, I was throwing my fangirl energy towards this Japanese band. I can say that my love for this band directed me to many of my interest these days- namely a great interest in Japanese fashion. I did, at one point, wanted to become just like the band’s guitarist, Hisashi!

These days, I hardly follow the band’s new projects but I still feel a strong connection with the songs and music videos I “grew up” with.

They already played their first concert in San Francisco and a fan kindly wrote up their set list. I am SO excited that they will be playing ‘SURVIVAL’, in particular. They didn’t play this at the last concert and I was slightly disappointed. Now, I will finally get to enjoy this song LIVE and I could not be more happy!!!

Otherwise, I am busy getting Halloween costumes done for myself and two other people. Also, I’m trying to figure out the best way to embed twitter on this blog’s side bar! I might be due for another website redesign…! I need to find time to learn CSS coding. I feel like I’ve reached the limit of what can be done with HTML some times.

Beecake

I was rewatching the extended version of Return of the King tonight. The end still makes me a little teary, despite how many times I’ve read the book or re-watched the movie. Yeah. What. I love the damn series. Sue me.

Also, just to get it out of the way– NO, I am not Orlando-Bloom-crazed. I admit that he’s a fine young man with many upstanding physical qualities, but seriously not my type. Infact, I’ve had my eyes on the two actors who played my favorite hobbits: Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd. I decided to get on Google and searched for the big fansites to get news on Billy Boyd. Not quite so much on Dominic Monaghan because I basically know what he is up to (looking for another job after LOST and, uh, having all kinds of fun with his hot girlfriend, I’m pretty sure… they haven’t broken up, have they? ;]). I went and checked Boyd’s Official Site, and lo and behold… I discover his band, Beecake.

Yeah. I’m totally behind all the “Hobbit” news. Sorry. My bad.

I’m actually really excited that he’s pursuing his musical career. I love Billy singing. It’s one of my favorite scenes in Return of the King!

All right. I couldn’t have a geek blog without mention some Hobbit-love at one point. Check out Billy’s band.. and enjoy!
