INTERVIEW: Young Actor Carina Battrick Stars in Viggo Mortensen’s FALLING

At eight-years-old, Carina Battrick’s rising success as an actor shows her passion for performing. Her upcoming film– Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut– Falling will be set to screen at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival this month. Read more about Carina and the movie below!

Hi Carina! Tell us about your upcoming film, FALLING– what is it about and what role do you play in it?

Falling is a family drama spanning over many generations. It is a story of the relationships we form with our loved ones and how those connections affect the life we lead as adults. In this film, I play the role of younger Sarah and what I really liked is how the relationship between my character and her father is portrayed when she grows up. How small moments that we might think are not big at the time can really have a big impact on who we end up becoming 30 years later.

INTERVIEW: Praneet Akilla On His First Major Role In Netflix’s OCTOBER FACTION

Praneet Akilla proves that it is never too late to pursue what you are truly passionate about as he joined the cast of Netflix’s OCTOBER FACTION. He is a rising young actor who loves science fiction, and you can watch him on screen and on the stage. Learn more about him in our interview below!

Hi Praneet, please tell us about yourself and your journey into acting. Where did it all start and what inspires you to be so passionate about being a part of the entertainment industry?

I’m an actor, singer, and filmmaker based in Vancouver/Toronto. I fell in love with storytelling and acting at an early age, watching movies, plays, and musicals. I would then re-enact them in my bedroom, in front of the bathroom mirror, pretending I was the action hero of my own movie. While others spent their free time playing outside or playing video games, I would study behind the scenes videos of how movies and tv shows were made. I loved the idea that with my words and actions, I could tell stories, and make people feel, cry, laugh. Growing up, I would act in many school musicals/plays, but in a South Asian household there is a stigma against the arts being a viable career option. I was good at math and science so I went and studied Chemical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal. When I graduated, I took a leap of faith. I quit my engineering job, went straight into auditioning for acting jobs for film/tv/stage and haven’t looked back.

INTERVIEW: Hallea Jones as the Queen Bee in Netflix’s LOCKE & KEY

Born in Toronto, actor and singer/songwriter, Hallea Jones, stars in Netflix’s LOCKE & KEY as Eden Hawkins– the “it” girl who does her own terrorizing of the show’s protagonists. Hallea talks about discovering the comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez and what she loves most about being a part of the adaptation below!

Hi Hallea, thank you for doing this interview with us! Tell us about your new show, Locke & Key, and your character, Eden Hawkins. Can you tell us about the role she will play in the story?

Thanks so much for having me! Ah, there’s so much to say. First off, Locke & Key is about a family moving back into their ancestral home after their father is murdered, only to find magical keys which border fun, and danger. While the kids are warding off a key hungry demon, the two oldest kids, Kinsey and Tyler go to school to deal with Matheson’s very own haute demon– Eden Hawkins. She’s the Regina George of the town, and does it all with a little smile on her face.

INTERVIEW: Gabriel Darku Stars In Netflix’s OCTOBER FACTION

Comic book fans are excited to watch Netflix’s October Faction, based on a graphic novel series written by Steve Niles and Damien Worm. Rising star, Gabriel Darku, stars as the show’s Geoff Allen and talks to DEFECTIVE GEEKS about joining the cast of a unique sci-fi, monster franchise.

Hi Gabriel! We are so excited to watch October Faction on Netflix. What can you tell us about the series and your character, Geoff Allen?

October Faction is a story about a family– the Allens– whose specialty happens to be hunting monsters. Parents Fred and Deloris carry on the family legacy unbeknownst to their children, Geoff and Viv, who believe them to be insurance agents. When the death of Fred’s father brings the family back to it’s roots, it becomes harder for Fred and Deloris to hide the truth as the twins begin to experience strange happenings and the town proves itself to be not-so-idyllic. It’s a fantastic and twisted story that– while living in a world of supernatural horror– is firmly rooted in the characters and their relationships. It also focuses on topics that relate heavily to society, which I love. My character Geoff is definitely a bit rebellious, and likes to do things his way. He has absolutely no issues with who he is and with being himself, which is great to see. However he definitely has to navigate some pretty rough waters throughout the season and its interesting to watch him handle such vulnerable situations.

INTERVIEW: Kimberly-Sue Murray Stars as a Vampire in Netflix’s V WARS

The highly anticipated show, produced by Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries), V WARS premiered on Netflix and actress, Kimberly-Sue Murray, stars in this vampire world as Danika Dubov. Her character exudes sexiness as well as being a complete badass– learn more below in our interview with Kimberly.

Congratulations on the premiere of your new show, V WARS, on Netflix! What is the show about and what role does your character, Danika Dubov, play in the series? In your opinion, what makes V WARS different from all the other vampire shows or movies?

Thank you so much! V Wars, based on Jonathan Maberry’s anthology and comics, is about an ancient pathogen that escapes the melting glaciers and infects anyone with the mutated gene turning them into vampires. A war breaks out as Dr. Luther Swann tries to find a cure to save his best friend, son and the rest of humanity. I play Danika Dubov, a vampire and Michael Fayne’s love interest throughout the show. She’s smart, resourceful, strategic and a great asset to Blood Nation. She and Michael have a great bond and hold each other up. While all of this is happening, Mila, who despises who’s become, is on a mission to seek revenge. In an earlier version of the script, Ava O’Malley stabbed Danika and killed her, I guess she couldn’t stand the influence Danika had over Michael. I’m glad we stuck to the book’s ending for Danika and Mila, it’s an incredibly tense moment between the two sisters. What happens next, I honestly have no idea!

When I was younger, I loved Disney channel and it sparked my interest in acting. My mom then spotted an ad in our local newspaper saying an agency was holding open call auditions. My first jobs were commercials, but I built my way up to bigger roles from there.

INTERVIEW: Devery Jacobs Stars In American Gods and Talks About Representation

Devery Jacobs will be starring in season 2 of American Gods and will play the character, Sam Black Crow, who she feels a close connection to because of her own background as an Indigenous woman. Besides acting, Devery is also a director and is standing up for representation through her art. Read more about it below!

How exciting is it for you to be a part of the new season of American Gods! We love the show. Tell us about your role as Sam Black Crow. Do you relate to your character?

I recognize how rarely audiences have seen a character like Sam on screen, so I don’t take playing her lightly. I have been such a fangirl of Neil Gaiman’s novel, American Gods, for years, and I completely connected with Sam Black Crow. As an actual sarcastic, queer Indigenous woman, I thoroughly related to Sam’s experiences and hounded my agent to make sure I auditioned for her. Sam Black Crow is such a fun, meddlesome character whose beliefs are complex. While she’s sarcastic and opinionated, she’s also deeply curious about life, and about Shadow, who she is introduced to and encounters in this upcoming season!

Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: New Character Images

Just in time for the Halloween season, Netflix has began teasing us with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a series based on the comic series with the same title. We all remember the charming television show, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, during the 90s, but this version of our favorite witch from the Archie comics universe will be much darker. This time she is played by actress, Kiernan Shipka (known for her role in Mad Men).

Already, the show takes a lot of the same palette from CW’s Riverdale, since they are in the same “universe” so to speak. Imagine all the crossover possibilities.

Check out more new teaser character images below, including Sabrina’s aunts and good ol’ Harvey (played by Ross Lynch).
