INTERVIEW: Eileen Li on 21 Thunder, Challenges as an Actor and Her Favorite Sailor Scout

Eileen Li is currently kicking butt in the industry and has appeared in television shows like Orphan Black and Degrassi: The Next Generation. She will be joining the cast of CBC’s 21 Thunder as Lara Yun and will guest star in the second season of Freeform’s Shadowhunters. We spoke to her about pursuing what you are passionate about and the challenges of being an Asian actress.

When did you know you wanted to become an actress and what was your biggest inspiration? What has been your biggest challenge as an actress?

The first time I seriously considered becoming an actor was when I was in the ninth grade and took my first drama class. I had been in school plays prior to that, but that was the first time I had really studied acting, and I was hooked.

SDCC 2015 // Day 1 — Her Universe Fashion Show

For the second year in a row, Her Universe put on their nerd-inspired fashion show that not only showcases the newest pieces from the Her Universe clothing line, but also gives aspiring designers a chance to show off their geek couture design to compete for a chance to design a Her Universe line for Hot Topic. Last year, Amy Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine won, and have recently collaborated with Her Universe designers to make the vintage-inspired Avengers line.

Cosplay Round Up: Anime Expo 2015

Another year of Anime Expo flew by, closing it’s 24th year.
As we’re coming down from our AX high, and gearing up for San Diego Comic Con, here’s a cool round up of cosplayers and cosplay gatherings we saw this year.

This year there was an abundance of love for classic shoujo manga like Sailor Moon, classic CLAMP Series, League of Legends. We also appreciated the abundance of sport anime cosplay, and the funny memes.

Many cosplayers were also able to make use of the pre-made photo sets that AX brings back every year, as well as the cosplay repair stations.

Michelle and Will’s Moonlight Wedding: Sailor Moon and Art Deco Inspired

Okay, no laughing allowed. I had a Sailor Moon themed wedding.

But perhaps not the rainbow colored, anime-poster ridden melee of sad artistic choices that you are expecting. Since my groom and I  are fairly fashionable adults with an pretty serious otaku problem, we finally landed on the perfect mash up of classy and nerdy for our big day: We had an art deco Sailor Moon-inspired wedding.

Michelle & Will's Moonlight Wedding: Sailor Moon inspired

The plan was to have an elegant, grown up wedding, with a highly stylized injection of Sailor Moon design into every nook and cranny! Utilizing the extensive archive of beautiful Sailor Moon imagery, such as the lockets, wands, and symbols from the manga and anime, as well as the influence of Art Deco moon and stars designs, pulling together the decor, graphics, and fashion into an elegant nerd wedding was an event planner’s dream! As a professional event producer for Bubble Punch, as well as working in a hotel for most of my college years (100+ wedding receptions and lived to tell the tale!), I had extensive wedding planning and decorating experience under my belt, and was confident I would be able to do something unique, yet totally otaku-driven, to suit our tastes. Keep in mind, despite all of this, it was STILL SUPER DUPER STRESSFUL since it was my own wedding, haha! But here I am, mind in tact, and ready to tell you all about it!

I just wanted to hop on my soapbox quickly and tell everyone that YOU ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY KIND OF WEDDING YOU WANT. I think a lot of readers have been amazed that my groom “allowed” me to do this, but the fact is that we were both equally excited about the theme, the nerdy music, and decorations, because it spoke to our common interests. So don’t be afraid to flaunt your nerdy side in public, and especially not at your wedding! It’s your day! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! WOO!

Below is a summary in photos of the wedding, then after that is a breakdown of Fashion, Graphics, and Decor notes and DIY links for everything! THIS POST IS LONG, BUT HANG IN THERE, IT’S TOTES WORTH IT. Thank you so, so much to Shannon Cottrell for all of the amazing photos!

Play the video and get teary eyed while the magical music plays in the background!

THE WEDDING!

Geekmas Time Is Here!

Christmas season is upon us, and now more than ever there are many geek gifting options.

I’ve seeing the various geeky gifts lists pop up here and there, gifts for lady geeks, gifts for dude geeks, gifts for lazy geeks, and so on.

But lets be honest, tis the season of giving, and buying for our fellow geeky friends what we could never justify buying for ourselves. Not because we don’t love treating ourselves to well earned gifts, but because sometimes we feel a tad bit guilty buying those $20.00 geek themed cookie cutters when we should probably spend that money responsibly, like on booze or kitty litter.

I have compiled a list of 10 awesomely geeky gifts that we love, and would love to receive, though we might not necessarily buy for ourselves. However, we would have zero problems buying this for our friends or significant others (hint hint, significants!) I have also made this list completely absent of t-shirts and leggings, much as I love them, I think we can aim to be a little more creative than what we normally give our fellow geeks.

10. Virtually Vintage – 3D Geek Ornaments ($10.00/ea)

These 3D ornaments are rather gorgeous, and would be an amazing addition to any geek themed Christmas tree.

In the name of the Moon, We will cheer for you!

Sailor Cheer-17

This summer marked the return of Sailor Moon to tv, both across Japan, and internationally via streaming sites like Crunchy Roll and Hulu.

Growing up with Sailor Moon, plenty of us here at Defective Geeks, along with our friends from Skirts & Swords, could not resist doing a causual variant cosplay for Sailor Moon Day at Anime Expo.  So we got to brainstorming and decided it would be awesome to be Sailor Moon Cheerleaders.
