SDCC 2010 / The Scott Pilgrim Experience

Inside the Scott Pilgrim Experience at the Hilton Gaslamp

I arrived at San Diego’s Comic Con on Friday, having missed all of Preview Night and the first day. Sniff! The minute my badge was in my hands, I went across the street to the Scott Pilgrim Experience set-up at the Hilton Gaslamp.

Are we tired of Scott Pilgrim yet?

Well, I’m not!

First stop was the “STUFF” line where I received a bag with a really, cute free T-Shirt inside. A Scott Pilgrim food truck was serving free garlic bread to everyone. Bread makes you fat?!… and apparently have stinky, garlic bread, but it’s all good. The line to go inside was really long and I believe I waited a good hour. It was worth it though and I got to speak to some nice people in the line. Once inside, they had set up a live t-shirt screen-print area where fans can pick and choose their t-shirt colors and which design they wanted to screen-print on it.

There is a flip-book station for friends to coordinate fight scenes that are made into a flip book. People can also record a video greeting to send to friends and upload to facebook.

Click here to watch mine! I’m totally dorky.

Lucky people got to meet and greet with Edgar Wright, Bryan Lee O’Malley and the movie cast members, but I didn’t. It’s okay though, because I seriously just wanted free stuff!

Celebrating Scott’s Finest Hour

FINEST HOUR//Midnight Release

Meltdown Comics hosted an awesome midnight release party for the very last volume of the Scott Pilgrim series by Bryan Lee O’Malley: volume number six, entitled “Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour.” I arrived close to 10:30pm and promptly ran into my LA Weekly co-worker and friend, Liz Ohanesian, who covered the event for the website. Guests were fed with free cookies, milk, coffee and (of course) alcohol. There were entertainment that included live music and stand-up comedians, tossing jokes about Batman and geeks.

The store held a trivia contest and also, a cosplay contest.

Nicole Klepper, dressed as Ramona Flowers, took the grand prize!

Winner of the cosplay contest, Nicole!

The night went by quite fast because Meltdown Comics is no newbie when it comes to hosting events and entertaining people. Right after the cosplay contest, there was five minutes left on the clock before the book was officially released. I stood in line with my friend, another girl named Nicole (she was dressed as Roxy) and it took almost an hour till we got to the cashier. Dedicated fans stood in line longer, eager to be part of the first few people to read the book.

They even streamed the whole event online and more than 46K people watched! I wonder if I was seen on camera?

It was a fun night and I plan to attend more of Meltdown’s events in the future.

Spaced to Scott: A Night with Edgar Wright

Gizzle and I made it out to the LA Film Festival on June 20th at Downtown LA for the Edgar Wright Saves the World panel, co-hosted by J.J. Abrams. The discussion involved Abrams asking Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming Scott Pilgrim Saves the World movie) questions as they showed different clips that encompassed Wright’s entire career. We even caught a glimpse of one of his earliest indie film that involved mostly his friends running around with guns at a park.

Wright talks about the television series, Spaced, his first project involving Simon Pegg; music videos he directed in between his transition from TV to movie; to his hit movie Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz; and then the night ended with a completed 9-minute clip from the Scott Pilgrim movie.

It was really neat to see these two well-known directors talk to each other and to the audience and we learned more about Wright’s directing/film career. It was a great opportunity for fans of his work to get to know the man behind the camera, as they say.

SUPER FUN PARTY!

SUPER FUN PARTY!

I am SO happy that I got to go to the Scott Pilgrim’s SUPER FUN PARTY! An E3 after party hosted by I Am 8-Bit in conjunction with Universal Studios, promoting the release of both the movie and the Scott Pilgrim video game. I did not have work on the day of and managed to drag my butt, and my friends’ butts, to L.A. super early and we stood in-line for about an hour before the party opened. It was all good though because we had a food truck, Fry Smith, to entertain our appetite… did I ever mention how in-love I am with all of L.A.’s food trucks?

SUPER FUN PARTY! SUPER FUN PARTY!

We slowly trickled inside the small production studio and I loved the atmosphere immediately. I felt like I was in a house party, Scott Pilgrim style… a house party with a FREE KEG BUFFET WITH DIFFERENT BEER FLAVOR THAT IS! There were three different stations where attendees can play the full unreleased video game on the PS3 (I am hoping they release the game for Nintendo DS because it would be perfect for it, in my opinion!).

One television in the corner played the movie trailer on repeat, and there was even a separate room for the dance floor. They had another room that was reserved for the cast members of the movie, but alas… Michael Cera and gang never showed up. It’s okay though, because it certainly did not take away from the experience of the whole night! Though the VIP room remained sad and empty for the rest of the night. Creator of the series, Bryan O’Malley, was there of course, but I failed to say hello to the guy. Though I’m sure he got a lot of love from fans throughout the night.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Movie

I am so excited for this movie.

I love the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by Bryan O’Malley. Plus, Edgar Wright (director of movies like Hot Fuzz) directed this film! Which means it should be awesome… even if just borderline awesome… but somehow, it will be full of awesome and a touch of epic.

At first, I was reluctant to see Michael Cera in the role of Scott Pilgrim, but since I’ve viewed the trailer (a few million times)… I think it is a good fit. Since Scott acts like the constant “victim” in the comic book, Cera’s acting style might just pull it off.

Either way, I think it would be a good and fun watch, even for people who hasn’t read the comic books. Though you guys REALLY should. I mean… really. Do it. It’s kind of epic.

Watch the trailer at the official Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World movie website.
