SDCC 2014: ‘The Devil Inside’

This year we were lucky enough to conduct a video interview with Dennis Calero and Todd Stashwick, the creative team responsible for the awesome web comic/graphic novel The Devil Inside. The bad news is that our audio committed suicide half way through the video interview. OH NOEZ!

Yes, we are very professional and you should let us interview you.

Luckily my brain is ever so slightly larger than the size of a walnut, so I remember a lot of what they said during the interview that you may not be able to make out from the audio.

Here is some supplemental content to the video interview (Author’s Note: This is a summary and is not word for word what Dennis and Todd said):

How have the characters evolved over time?

He started off as a man with an idea of who he wants to be, and over time he has grown more of a conscience. Also he is not what you typically picture when you think of “the Devil”. He does not have a red cape with a pitchfork and it is not necessarily his intention to bring the evil out of others, despite the fact that it happens. In this story it is more humanity that causes the problems than the Devil, so it’s the evil of others that surrounds him more than the evil of being the Devil. In fact, its also a Pinnocchio story. He over time wants to become a “real boy”, or in this case more like a human being. On the back of the book it even says, “Evil is not a force, it is a choice.” He, the Devil, wants and has that choice to not be evil anymore.

SDCC2014 Party Recap: PARTY WOLF EVOLUTION. ALL HAIL THE PARTY TIGER

Having just finished nursing a week-long hangover from San Diego Comic Con, I feel it is my duty to report upon the wild Party Wolf life that we had been boasting about pre-SDCC. So here it is, the round up of Party Wolf adventures 2014.. or… “How I felt like my body was physically dying, but I kept on anyhow… FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.” I’d like to start by saying, DESPITE HOW IT LOOKS, we are all into just hanging out with our friends, and looking for a good time to meet other like minded people. Of course it’s always nice to be surprised by a celebrity sighting and cool swag, but if this Comic Con has done anything, it has only reinforced the fact that no matter HOW SWANK DA CLUB MIGHT BE, if your homies aren’t there, you’re gonna end up bailing to go find them and have good times somewhere else. The party wolf went through a pokemon-sort of evolution and became… THE PARTY TIGER. LOYAL TO HER PRIDE/CLAN WHATEVER. ROARRRR.

This was me at Comic Con. Well, the tiger head was actually a backpack. And it got a lot of attention--some good, some bad, haha.
The Majestic Party Tiger transformation. Chubby Bunny at Comic Con. Well, the tiger head was actually a backpack. And it got a lot of attention–some good, some bad, haha.
A video to play in the background as you read on, haha.

INTERVIEW: Drew Nelson of FX’s ‘The Strain’

unnamedFor those of you looking forward to Guillermo del Toro’s show The Strain, you are in for a real treat. Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing actor, writer, and director Drew Nelson who plays Matt Sayles in the upcoming horror thriller. On top of telling us about The Strain and his character Matt, Drew also talks about what inspired him to become an actor, his dream role, and even tells us which superpower he’d pick and his favorite comic book movie!

Drew was a lot of fun to chat with, so make sure to check out this interview to learn more about this up and coming talent!

What inspired you to become an actor?

I guess my parents always kind of had an inkling that I was more of an artist type. They’d always get me to do voices for my aunts and uncles at family gatherings and stuff like that. Further into high school I was always the kid in English class reading the Shakespeare text but always putting a character voice on so every time we would be reading plays and stuff in English class they’d always say, “Get Drew! Get Drew to read Friar Laurence.” It kind of stemmed from there.

It’s also kind of a crazy serendipitous thing. Our regular drama teacher went off on maternity leave and they called in this supply teacher from New York City and she had just graduated from Circle in the Square school. She came to our class on a temporary basis and she taught us real scene study stuff that she had learned in New York and I just instantly loved it. Lo and behold she thought that I had a knack for it and asked me to be a lead in a play. She was doing a play that year and cast me as a lead. The play was called Detective Story and it’s all history from there pretty much. She was the main reason why I got into it.

INTERVIEW: Austin Basis of CW’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Austin BasisFor those of you who are fans of the CW’s Beauty and the Beast you are in for a real treat. I got to talk to actor Austin Basis who plays JT Forbes on the People’s Choice Award winning show. In this interview Austin talks about some of his favorite things about playing JT, what superpowers would he and JT pick, what fans of Beauty and the Beast can look forward to this season, along with letting us know his geeky side by telling us his favorite comic book movies!

Austin was kind enough to take the time for this interview and was a lot of fun to chat with. Check it out!

First off, congratulations on the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Sci-Fi Fantasy Show.

Thank you!

What is one of your favorite things about playing JT Forbes on Beauty and the Beast?

One of my favorite things is getting to have the awesome one-liners that the writer’s write and I am lucky in that respect. Another character, Tess (played by Nina Lisandrello), also gets some zingers, but I feel like JT maybe unfairly gets a lion share of awesome one-liners that kind of stand out in the show as a word or phrase that people will remember. It’s always fun to kind of challenge myself to try and say it in as many different ways as possible, but also try to get the most funny out of the line in a way that doesn’t violate the reality or the circumstance that we’re trying to portray in the world of Beauty and the Beast.

Hey, TV, You’re Awesome This Season

sleepyhollow

Technically, I don’t watch television since I have been watching everything online now. I still don’t know if I should feel bad about that or not, but I do things during the night and-and-and– it’s super hard to follow TV schedules, you guys. If you’ve been listening to our podcast, you know which shows I am big on this season but if not, I decided to write this blog for you and explain in Space Pirate Queen terms why I think these shows are awesome. Get ready.
