Team Unicorn’s “For the Win”

Ever since G33k & G4m3r Girls made its debut on the internet (and shook things up in the community, may I add), I have been a fan of Team Unicorn. This new video was a long time waiting and guess it what? It will effin’ rock your supehero underoos off! The video is set at a Mad Max-apocalyptic style environment with Aisha Tyler looking like a badass — bonus! The girls of Team Unicorn got to look hot and kick ass while inviting a bunch of cosplayers to wield weaponry and throw in their own punches at the bad guys.

Here at Defective Geeks, we have always advocated the right of any woman to look and feel sexy while having a lot of passion about whatever they are into, whether it be books, Thor, shoes or time travel, etc. Team Unicorn is a group of gorgeous and talented lady geeks and they are having tons of fun with it. I love them!

At least, watch their video. It’s kind of awesome.

‘Light Masters’ – Activate Your Destiny (Panel and Photos)

Last weekend my fellow Defective Geeks and I went to Comikaze Expo. There were so many awesome vendors and panels that it was sincerely difficult to choose. One of the panels I decided to check out was for a film called Light Masters. The booth for the movie teased us with a dystopian future and the phrase, “Join the Resistance.” I’m a sucker for this premise, so naturally I had to find out what this Light Masters was all about.

The pitch trailer for Light Masters:

The panel started off with us watching this pitch trailer. Needless to say, I was intrigued. The panel featured Kelly Rigg, Clare Grant, Teresa Decher, Keith Adams, along with other cast members and people involved with the project.

Lady Geeks at Comikaze Expo 2011

Comikaze Expo came and went–it was a whirlwind of a weekend for our lady geeks. It was the first time that all of the Los Angeles based Defective Geeks went together as a team to rigorously cover an event. For two days, the Space Pirate Queen, Gizzy B, Fortune Cookie and Sailor Mizz ran about the convention floor to try and see as much as we can.

Comikaze was a definite success with 40,000 attendees, big guest stars and a constantly crowded exhibit hall. We did a million interviews and took a million photos. We will slowly but surely post video interviews as we get them together so stand by for some awesome content! A special shout out and thank you to the boys– Nick, Joaquin and Steve– from Red Sheep Productions for volunteering as our film crew for the entire weekend.

The long line of people waiting to pick up their badges. Yikes!

Nerdy Girls Can Be Sexy

I reached out to Team Unicorn at the beginning of the month and asked if they’ll be interested in doing an interview for the LA Weekly Style Council online blog. It took a couple of weeks of e-mails back and forth between Michelle Boyd before we finally decided to do the interview via Skype on a Monday morning. Now, you can read it online at Team Unicorn: Sexy and Geeky Girls, They Do Exist!

Team Unicorn: Milynn Sarley, Michele Boyd, Rileah Vanderbilt, and Clare Grant

This was my first professional interview and as much as I was excited to do it– I was also super nervous! I am a Fine Arts student, not a trained journalist. I wasn’t sure what the protocol was… but with a lot of things that are new to me, I tend to just face it head on without hesitation. Otherwise, how can I know if I could actually do it? The worst that could happen is I fail, I suppose, but I try not to think about that.

We started the interview at around 9am on a Monday morning and the girls were so laid back and kind that I relaxed. There was a lot of laughter. It was difficult to keep myself from having a full on conversation with them. They talked about a lot of the same things I liked and I just wanted to jump in! I held back and reminded myself that I needed to get full answers for a proper interview. At the end of it, I thanked them for taking the time to talk to me and they said they agreed to the interview because I asked really good questions (I had sent them the questions via e-mail in advance)! :D I was very happy to hear this because I did try to come up with questions that were relevant and entertaining. Even the more general questions, I tried to spin it in a more interesting way.

Of course, having a little over half an hour interview with four girls turned out to be a whole lot of material. The final draft is about half of the original conversation, but I worked hard to edit it down to the best Q&As and still keep the fun and playful spirit.

In the end, the interview was met with a lot of positive responses and Team Unicorn seems proud and happy about it too! Hooray for satisfying results all around! I’m glad that this first interview had gone well and I know I can only improve as I do more of it. Wish me luck!
