SDCC 2014: ‘The Devil Inside’

This year we were lucky enough to conduct a video interview with Dennis Calero and Todd Stashwick, the creative team responsible for the awesome web comic/graphic novel The Devil Inside. The bad news is that our audio committed suicide half way through the video interview. OH NOEZ!

Yes, we are very professional and you should let us interview you.

Luckily my brain is ever so slightly larger than the size of a walnut, so I remember a lot of what they said during the interview that you may not be able to make out from the audio.

Here is some supplemental content to the video interview (Author’s Note: This is a summary and is not word for word what Dennis and Todd said):

How have the characters evolved over time?

He started off as a man with an idea of who he wants to be, and over time he has grown more of a conscience. Also he is not what you typically picture when you think of “the Devil”. He does not have a red cape with a pitchfork and it is not necessarily his intention to bring the evil out of others, despite the fact that it happens. In this story it is more humanity that causes the problems than the Devil, so it’s the evil of others that surrounds him more than the evil of being the Devil. In fact, its also a Pinnocchio story. He over time wants to become a “real boy”, or in this case more like a human being. On the back of the book it even says, “Evil is not a force, it is a choice.” He, the Devil, wants and has that choice to not be evil anymore.

Los Animales is a web comic hosted at, written by Liz O. and drawn by Jeaux J. Pedro Lionovsky and Manda Pandarosian stars as the two, somewhat snarky, main characters of the series and they are working at the very last record store in town. Liz O. is not only a writer by trade, she is also a DJ and probably my biggest music nerd friend. Marlowe the Monster at the Brands Boutique Pop Up Shop

The Brands Boutique will have pop up shop at Anime Expo on June 29-July 2, 2012 selling merchandise from 10 different and local indie brands in California. One of them is Marlowe the Monster by my friend, Shing Yin Khor, which will be available at the shop this year.

How can you not love her work? These monsters are so adorable and she puts in a lot of work with all her individual pieces. They’re all handmade by her, baby, make no mistake. She not only sculpts them, she paints them and she publishes books and comics. Yes, she is one productive and busy lady — which is why I appreciate it when she takes time to eat ramen with me once in awhile!

Here’s an interview with Shing and her participation this year with Brands Boutique.

Dennis Calero and Todd Stashwick

Dennis Calero and Todd Stashwick are collaborating on an ongoing web comic series called the Devil Inside. Pages can be viewed on Stashwick’s website and new pages are updated each week on Wednesdays. Dennis is a talented comic book artist and has done work for Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. I first met him at San Diego’s Comic Con 2009, but has continually kept in touch with him via his twitter (we’re Twitter Buddies Forever! TBF?!). He is the best person and so incredibly talented… I can watch him draw all day!

Todd is an actor and was seen in NBC’s Heroes‘ final season, and also alongside Minnie Driver in The Riches. Among the Supernatural fandom he is notable for his role as ‘Dracula’ from the Monster Movie episode. It was incredibly exciting to meet him! His episode was one of my favorites from the series, check out this clip, it’s one of the funniest scenes in the series:

These guys are definitely an entertaining comic duo! I am excited about their web comic so don’t forget to check it out!
