Crochet & Knitting

Halloween Craft – Nightmare Before Christmas

Final Halloween craft post. One of my favourite Halloween films is Nightmare Before Christmas. I couldn’t resist making a crochet Zero, Jack’s pet dog. Pattern available here.

I’ve taken lots of photos of the creation process, so check out my flickr if you need to see more angles.

I started with the main body, the odd heart shaped bit. Then the under-body, jaw, and finally head. I blocked, or flattened, out all the pieces but the head.

Great Halloween Movies: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

When people think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer they usually think of the television show. I am a huge fan of the show and pretty much idolized Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy. Something I’ve noticed though is that a lot of the fans of the show dislike the movie, which came out in 1992. I, for one, am not one of these people. I adore the movie and think it is worthy of being on my list of “Halloween Flicks”.

For those of you who don’t know, the movie came out years before the show. It stars the lovely Kristy Swanson as the ditzy valley girl turned slayer, Buffy, and Luke Perry as Pike, the adorably grunge boy who finds out that vampires exist. There are a lot of reasons why I love this movie. One of the reasons is that as a fan of the show, it’s interesting to see the first version of the iconic character, a Buffy 1.0 you could say. The movie is more lighthearted than the show and is full of delicious Whedon-esque humor, but still has its dark moments. At times it’s over the top, like the bravado and grandiose of the villain Lothos, played by Rutger Hauer, but for me that is part of what makes this movie so much fun.

Another reason why I love this movie is the portrayal of vampires. They’re the perfect mix of old school gothic vampires with contemporary humor. One of vampires is played by none other than Paul Reubens. Yes, THAT Paul Reubens. These vampires have sharp teeth, pale skin, dark circles, and love to hiss. It’s a little cheesy, but it makes me think of vampires from the old Hammer movies. Therefore, they’re awesome.

I have to say that even though the movie is lighthearted and humorous, it’s pretty atmospheric. There’s this whole sequence that takes place in a storage yard where they keep parade floats. At night, it looks pretty damn creepy. It reminds me of places you drive by at night and all of a sudden a shiver goes down your spine, but you can never quite explain why.
