BEST OF 2012! Part One
Pilbeam, the Space Pirate Queen, Radiophile and Gizzy B put their heads together to wrap up 2012 with a list of their BEST OF 2012 picks!
Best Movie of 2012: Anna Karenina
There were SO many amazing films to choose from this year. Avengers, The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, but I walked out of the cinema after watching Anna Karenina and I felt like I had just seen a master piece painted in front of me. Every move on screen was a brush stroke. And my god, the costumes….
Best Television Show of 2012: Once Upon a Time
This was a toss up between Downton Abbey or Once. Once won because Downton didn’t have enough Maggie Smith this season. Once keeps drawing me in, and I’m really looking forward to it after its break.
I also have a crush on Mr. Gold/Rumpy as I like to call him.
Best Read of 2012: Soulless (series) by Gail Carriger
Not first published in 2012, but the final book in the series was. I fell in love with this series. It was Jane Austen with steampunk, vampires, and style. What’s not to love?
Best Character of 2012: Gollum
Andy Serkis better get an Oscar, or so help me!…
He was amazing in Lord of the Rings and he topped it in The Hobbit. The man is an acting god.
Best Apocalypse of 2012: Twilight
Yup, it finally ended. Did the world end? Well, ours didn’t but I bet the twi-hards did.
Let’s just all be glad it’s over now and we can return to proper drama in Downton Abbey.
Best Blog/Website of 2012: Wikipedia
Okay, this is lame, but where would we be without it today? I mean, you get in an argument about something, you check wikipedia; you can’t remember a stupid fact, you check Wikipedia. It is the Hitchhiker’s Guide incarnate. We are living in the future people, Arthur Dent Lives!
Best Viral Video of 2012: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
It’s not viral, but I absolutely adore The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
If you even kind of like Jane Austen, they’re totally worth it. It’s such a fun way to revisit Pride and Prejudice.
Best Plot Twist of 2012: Star Wars and Disney merger
Now there is a plot twist I didn’t anticipate. Not that I mind it happening, but would not have put that in the “Things that will happen in 2012” list.
Best Twitter of 2012: @Mental Floss
I don’t use twitter lots, but I really enjoy the random trivia they provide on a daily basis. Some of it is relevant to things going on, other times it’s stuff like “10 toys that got recalled for weird reasons” or “What the Home Alone family is doing now”. Good for killing time, and you might learn something!
Best “film I really should have gotten around to seeing sooner” of 2012: Easy A
So, I’m behind a little bit. It just took me 2 years to get around to watching it, but I’m so glad I did because now I adore it. I understand why everyone loves Emma Stone, because now I do too. Stanley Tucci steals the show as the dad, though. Spell it with your peas!
Worst of 2012
Lots of things were the worst of 2012. It seemed like 2012 just kept trying to top itself with shitty things happening. It won’t be hard for 2013 to be better. Let’s all make a fresh start and think of lovley things, like kittens!
Space Pirate Queen’s Picks
Best Movie of 2012: The Hobbit
I live in my own little Middle Earth bubble and despite what the internet, LotR fans, critics, etc. had to say about this movie– I absolutely loved it. I was moved while watching the film like no other movie did this whole year and that’s all that matters to me.
Best Television Show of 2012: The Vampire Diaries
I got suckered into this Vampire fantasy this year because let’s face it, Ian Somelhalder as Damon Salvatore is just amazing and super sexy. Trust me, the show is actually really good. Crazy good.
Best Read of 2012: Tough Shit: Life Advice From A Fat Lazy Slob by Kevin Smith
“People need to be regularly reminded that they began as cum. Not to diminish or cut ‘em down to size– quite the contrary: I tell people they were cum once as a gesture of my awe at their very existence and to pat ‘em on the back. There are no losers in life because every one of us who is born is a huge fucking winner.”
Best Character of 2012: Jenny from Nerdterns
Nerdterns is a Nerdist web series that I absolutely adore and Jenny is the scary boss lady who has a heart of somewhat gold-ish nature somewhere in… her… somewhere… while she’s kicking your shit over. Anyways, the show is hilarious and I love her character. You guys need to watch this show.
Best Apocalypse of 2012: Jay and Seth Vs. The Apocalypse
Best Toy of 2012: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I really enjoy the new My Little Pony series and the toys are, of course, adorable. I finally broke down and purchased a Rarity figure just recently.
Best Blog/Website of 2012: JustJennRecipes.com
Baking. Food. Lots of it. The majority of them are geek-centric. ‘Nuff said! Plus, I’ve had Jenn’s cookies and cupcakes and they are absolutely delicious.
Best Viral Video of 2012: Kristen Bell’s Sloth Meltdown
I mean, come on. I can’t stop loving this and Kristen Bell.
Best Plot Twist of 2012: Clerks III
Kevin Smith recently announced that instead of making Hit Somebody a film, it will become a short, television series. Therefore, the last movie he will make is now Clerks III — snooch to the nooch!
Best Podcast of 2012: FEaB: Four Eyes and a Beard
An unlikely, or perhaps quite likely, duo — Scott Mosier (Smodcast) and Matt Mira (Nerdist) got together and decided to start a podcast. It’s super entertaining to hear these guys talk about life, food and books. I suggest you give them a listen, immediately!
Best Misunderstood Bad Guy of 2012: Thomas from LEGEND (Marie Lu)
Team Thomas is still a small club but I have a feeling we might be accepting new members by the time the sequel, Prodigy, is released in January 2013. TEAM THOMAS FOREVER!
Worst of 2012: The Fake Geek Girls Vs. Real Geek Girls Debate
Seriously, let it go, Internet. This is a debate that goes around and around in a circle because it means NOTHING! You can not keep attempting to categorize girls and put them in boxes. We come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and all levels of everything. So stop. Just stop.
