Awesome Fanfic Monday: John Watson’s Grief
Welcome to Awesome Fanfic Monday!
I, like many, love Sherlock. It is a well written, very well acted show with a great rendition of an iconic character. When Sherlock (spoiler alert if you’re way behind) supposedly committed suicide that was the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. It was heartbreaking to see John’s grief to the loss of his best friend. For this week’s fanfic I chose a story that catalogues John’s grief and adjustment to the loss of his unique friend.
This week’s Awesome Fanfic Monday is dedicated to Texting a Disconnected Phone by Cumberbatch Critter of Fanficion.net.
What I really enjoyed about this story is that it is told small chapters, in each one John sends a different text to Sherlock’s phone and it describes what is going through John’s head at that moment. Sometimes he’s at Sherlock’s grave, other times he’s staring at his chair in their flat. With each chapter his grief changes and progresses. The author, in my opinion, depicts John is a realistic way that is relatable and cannonical with the show.
I am a sucker for the hurt/comfort genre and the author does a fantastic job of creatively and realistically describing what John probably went through after the events of that season finale. The chapters go all the way to John meeting Mary and planning his wedding and how he wishes he could pick Sherlock as his best man. I love the idea of John texting Sherlock the entire time Sherlock was gone, that is totally something he would do.
If you want something to feed your Sherlock fangirl hunger then definitely check out Texting a Disconnected Pphone by Cumberbatch Critter.
