MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Batman: Year One’

During the last Comic Con I was lucky enough to grab some sweet seats for the screening of Batman: Year One. The animated film will, unfortunately, not be released onto video until October 18th, 2011. For us psycho fans at the con, though, we got to see it a good few months early.

Batman: Year One, written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli, was the first Batman graphic novel I ever read. I had already been a huge fan of the character thanks to the animated series and Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, but much to my shame I had not yet read any of the source materials. Batman: Year One had me hook, line, and sinker, so hearing about an adapted movie made me a mixture of excited and wary. Much to my relief, the animated movie was really well done.

‘Batman: Year One’ Trailer

Finally, a trailer has been released for the animated version of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One.

Batman: Year One was the first Batman comic I ever read, so this is a project I’ve been really looking forward to. The animated movie features the voices of Benjamin McKenzie (Batman), Bryan Cranston (Gordon), Eliza Dushku (Catwoman), and Katee Sackhoff (STARBUCK FTW, I mean, Detective Sarah Essen) and is directed by Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery.

The movie will premiere at Comic Con on Friday 8pm in Ballroom 20.

If Liu and Montgomery properly translated this story into an animated movie, then it should be a damn good time. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, it looks like they did just that. I can’t wait to find out for myself :)
