Marlowe the Monster at the Brands Boutique Pop Up Shop

The Brands Boutique will have pop up shop at Anime Expo on June 29-July 2, 2012 selling merchandise from 10 different and local indie brands in California. One of them is Marlowe the Monster by my friend, Shing Yin Khor, which will be available at the shop this year.

How can you not love her work? These monsters are so adorable and she puts in a lot of work with all her individual pieces. They’re all handmade by her, baby, make no mistake. She not only sculpts them, she paints them and she publishes books and comics. Yes, she is one productive and busy lady — which is why I appreciate it when she takes time to eat ramen with me once in awhile!

Here’s an interview with Shing and her participation this year with Brands Boutique.

I’m 17 Again

No, I am not referring to the movie staring the sexy Zac Efron. I am referring to the way two books in particular have made me feel. My favorite type of story is one that leaves you feeling bittersweet, lusting for more, and may even have you rolling around on the floor because of the drama. A good story is one that takes you out of your own world and puts you in one where in alternate universe you can be the hero. The last time I felt this way was when I was a teenager reading books like His Dark Materials and Harry Potter, fantasy and science fiction books full of love, fighting, and purpose.

The two books I am talking about are Legend by Marie Lu and Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  I devoured these books. They had everything I want in a story; a strong female character, the fight between good vs. evil, and of course a love interest.

INTERVIEW: Danielle Hulton, Owner of Ada’s Technical Books

During Geek Girl Con 2011, Shing of Sawdust Bear Press and I had the pleasure of sitting next to Ada’s Technical Books inside the exhibit hall. The owner, Danielle Hulton, was at the convention for the entire weekend and I found it really cool that she owned her own bookstore! I think most of us book lovin’ people have had dreams about spending the rest of our lives surrounded by books.

Below, I interview Danielle on her fabulous Lady Geek life as a bookstore owner in Seattle!

What makes Ada’s Technical Books different from the rest of independent bookstores? Where did the name come from?

DANIELLE HULTON: Ada’s Technical Books is a technical bookstore. This means that we exclusively sell books on Math, Computers, Science, and Engineering. We also sell children’s books on these topics as well as some Science Fiction and Biographies of scientists. Just like most independent bookstores, we sell lots of extra things besides books. Our “extras” are also focused towards the technically minded, so we have things like puzzles, molecule earrings, and geeky cards. Our tag line is “A bookstore for geeks, by geeks.”

Ep. 39 Rescue All the Cats

The Lady Defective Geeks discuss young adult books and the dystopian genre. They discuss several books like ‘Legend’, ‘Hunger Games’, ‘1984’ and ‘The Giver.’ We also try to figure out what we would do if we were thrown into a Battle Royale type situation. Basically, we would all probably die quick deaths and Sailor Mizz just wants to rescue all the cats.
