GEEK LIFE: The Shy Girl

Many of you can probably relate to growing up shy and feeling awkward. I was a very shy and dorky child/teenager. I was quick to embrace “unique awkwardness” but my passiveness was a negative trait according to adults. I was told by teachers and adults that I needed to get over my shyness. That I needed to participate in class more, to speak up more for myself, and to talk more in general. It’s an overwhelming feeling to be forced out of my personality comfort zone and I spent most of my school days terrified of having to speak in front of a classroom.

Today,I am no longer scared of speaking out and showing off who I am. Just this past year, I’ve already done several live podcast shows with Defective Geeks. Overcoming my shyness was not easy and it took me years and years. I’m still shy in a lot of ways. The journey is different for everyone and I can’t give an exact guideline on a How-To NOT be shy. For me, it was a lot of different factors and experiences, plus just generally growing up.

GEEK LIFE: 2012, the Year of the Dragon

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. In my case in 2011, life has thrown me a giant ball that is as hard as the hardest of rocks. With spikes. More than once. I’m still trying to get out from under it actually.

In all seriousness, last year really was a rough year for me. I had to deal with the death of one of my best friend at the beginning of 2011. Lots of not so equally shitty things happened in between but they were still shitty anyways. Then my long-term boyfriend dumped me right before Christmas (jerk). So much fun, right? I pretty much started 2012 the same way I started 2011: DEPRESSED.

I have to say… it’s during the worst times of my life that my nerd side really proved to be most comforting. Geek passion helps heals, ladies and gentlemen.

GEEK LIFE: My Fandom Friend and Wedding Bells

Not too long ago, I had a lot of friends who I met online. Maybe roughly about a decade ago it was pretty typical to have more online friends than “real life” friends-who-you-now-only-talk-to-through-Facebook. By online friends I mean people who I strictly met on the internet, mostly on Livejournal or whatnot before I actually met them in person. Honestly, I still have friends on Livejournal who I have never met in person!

You are probably thinking: What? You still have your Livejournal? Or for those who were born in 1998, you’re asking: What the fuck is a Livejournal? Or a Xanga or a Myspace for that matter.

The point is I have met amazing people through Livejournal alone and that is why I still keep my account somewhat active. One of those people is Gin.

Me, Gin and little Mabo
Japan 2008 – I know, I look like a boy but this is me with Gin and Mabo, the ferret.

I don’t have the best memory but I know I started interacting with Gin online during the early 2000 and we met in person in 2004.
