Geekmas Time Is Here!

Christmas season is upon us, and now more than ever there are many geek gifting options.

I’ve seeing the various geeky gifts lists pop up here and there, gifts for lady geeks, gifts for dude geeks, gifts for lazy geeks, and so on.

But lets be honest, tis the season of giving, and buying for our fellow geeky friends what we could never justify buying for ourselves. Not because we don’t love treating ourselves to well earned gifts, but because sometimes we feel a tad bit guilty buying those $20.00 geek themed cookie cutters when we should probably spend that money responsibly, like on booze or kitty litter.

I have compiled a list of 10 awesomely geeky gifts that we love, and would love to receive, though we might not necessarily buy for ourselves. However, we would have zero problems buying this for our friends or significant others (hint hint, significants!) I have also made this list completely absent of t-shirts and leggings, much as I love them, I think we can aim to be a little more creative than what we normally give our fellow geeks.

10. Virtually Vintage – 3D Geek Ornaments ($10.00/ea)

These 3D ornaments are rather gorgeous, and would be an amazing addition to any geek themed Christmas tree.

Ep. 122 Keep Calm and Cosplay On

In this episode, Fortune Cookie talks about what the Cosplay Fandom has taught her in her life, especially about time management and patience . . . and how to panic less when sewing. The rest of the conversation has a truck full of GAME-OF-THRONES-SPOILERS-EVERYONE-DIES-OH-MAH-GAD topics so beware if you’re not caught up with the show and/or the book. Fanfic Theater: Garfield x Street Fighter.

Street Fighter x Tekken: Thousand Pounds Short Film Announcement

Are you a Street Fighter or a Tekken fan? Maybe both? You should check out this fun announcement video from Thousands Pounds who are filming a short film produced by Capcom.

Yeah, I love the girl kicking butt! Mostly because I am a Tekken girl all the way. I’ve kicked a few butts in the arcade back in my days, let me tell you. I’m looking forward to the Street Fighter x Tekken collaboration… although I’m sure I’ll get my ass kicked in the game.

Thousands Pounds will release the film in conjunction with the game’s release in March 2012.

I do still enjoy doing cosplay photoshoot with friends. It’s a good excuse to just get a little bit silly!

Let’s talk about… FIGHT CLUB!

FIGHT CLUB! 2010

My boy, Jason, and I went to the Super Street Fighter IV FIGHT CLUB! launch party. We got a little lost and got there later in the night, but we certainly had time to absorb and enjoy the event. Jason is a bigger fan of the franchise than I am and it was fun to see him wide-eyed inside a studio/warehouse space filled with PS3s set up to play the game.

In the middle, they had a stage and gigantic screen where they were also projecting the game on to. There was a live DJ, make-up artists giving people an ‘injury’ make-over, and even artists doing live paintings. They had voice actors from the English dubbed cast members of the Super SFIV game, including my buddies, Kat Steel, Taliesin Jaffe and Matt Mercer! Of course, the majority of the crowd were interested in testing out the new game which will be dropping the streets this upcoming Tuesday.

At the end of the night, they had Street Fighter champions Daigo (representing Japan) and Justin Wong (representing the US) duke it out on the giant screen. The crowd got together to cheer and dividing to give their support on either side. The fight got rather intense and the crowd went crazy when it ended in a double KO!

I had so much fun and got caught up in the energy of the whole crowd. As I’ve said before, it’s so wonderful to see a large group of people geek out over a common passion!

Jab Strong… FIERCE!

Jab Strong Fierce @ gallery nucleus
Me as Sakura!

This past Saturday night, April 25, Gallery Nucleus hosted an opening party for the Street Fighter tribute art show, JAB STRONG FIERCE! It was a really cool event, albeit a very crowded one.

My boyfriend, my friend, and I went in costume– obviously, I cosplayed Sakura. My friend Valerie cosplayed Chun Li and my boyfriend went as Fei Long… I mainly did it because I wanted to get a 15% discount on a couple of archival prints I’ve been meaning to purchase from the gallery. Mwahaha. I am now a proud owner of Becky Cloonan’s “Lee” and Scott Campbell’s “Tree Spirit with Bike”!

I also meant to take more photos of cosplayers and such at the event; but since I was in costume myself, it was hard for me to balance the cosplayer/photographer game. Which is pretty lame… but at some point, I’ll have to figure out how to downplay the cosplay (on the rare occasions I dress up in public these days) while getting good shots!

My boyfriend even won second place in the cosplay competition they hosted that night! He won a shirt, an art print, and a copy of the Street Figther tribute book published by Udon Entertainment.

The art at the show was really cool though and a lot of them I loved. Unfortunately, I don’t really do well in incredibly crowded, small spaces so I didn’t get to enjoy the pieces as I would have liked to. Still, I manage to snap a shot with Cloonan’s painting, so that made me happy!

I’m pretty sure I missed out on a lot of cooler things at the opening though. It was hard for me to navigate because of the tight crowd… either way, I’m glad I went. The show will be up till May 11, so go check it out!
