INTERVIEW: Robert Lieberman on Directing for TV and ‘The Expanse’

Robert Lieberman has been working as a director for television and movies for years, with shows under his belt including The X-Files, D3: The Mighty Ducks, Lost Girl and most recently, The Expanse. Lieberman has been nominated for “Best Director in a Dramatic Series” from the Directors Guild of Canada. He talks to Defective Geeks about his own experience within the industry and the evolution of television shows.

Congratulations on your nomination for “Best Director in a Dramatic Series” from the Directors Guild of Canada! Tell us more about your experience directing episodes for THE EXPANSE television series.

Thank you. It is a great honor to be nominated by my peers and recognized in this way for my work.

The Expanse is a highly sophisticated, futuristic sci-fi show that I am honored to be a part of. Based on the series of novels by S. A. Corey, they tell a suspenseful and exciting story that takes place two hundred years from now when Mars has been colonized, the asteroid belt between here and Mars is inhabited by a group of the under-classed citizens and is policed by a private, corrupt enterprise. Mars and Earth are on the precipice of war as our unlikely heroes try to track down an entity that can survive in zero atmosphere and threatens the very existence of all organic life.

Interview: Thom Allison and SHUTUP, IT’S CHRISTMAS!

From a bartender (in space!) with a shady past to Mrs. Kringle, Thom Allison knows how to show his audience a fun time on screen or on stage. Check out our fun conversation with Allison about his cabaret Christmas show and his recurring role in SyFy’s Killjoys.

Shut Up, It’s Christmas! What is this magical cabaret show and what inspired this? Who is Lola Kringle and what are her wants and needs?

SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! is a cabaret I created that started as part of a smaller cabaret about 10 years ago. It was my second solo cabaret and it was a three set evening that I titled “Classic Christmas”, “Campy Christmas” and “Creepy Christmas”. Lola was part of Campy Christmas and she was only a small section. I wanted to do something a little different. Christmas-y but not so obvious and direct. I was inspired by A Charlie Brown Christmas. I wanted something that was funny, sweet and a little melancholy. I thought of being Santa but that was so “right on the nose”. So I thought about playing Mrs. Claus and telling stories about her life with Santa. But with all the bumps and joys. And I added the challenge of not allowing myself to use any Christmas songs for that section. It was all musical theatre songs with a couple of standards thrown in. It was a small section that people really enjoyed so much that several years later I developed her into a whole 50 minute act. She became the first act and then in the second act, I come out as myself and sing my version of Christmas songs, with anecdotes and audience interaction. And SHUT UP, IT’S CHRISTMAS! was born.

Tamsen McDonough of Syfy’s KILLJOYS

tamsen

Tamsen McDonough currently plays Lucy, the most cheeky AI spaceship in the galaxy, in SyFy’s KILLJOYS. She brings in a lot of fun to the show, keeping things spicy for the main characters (and maybe a little weird sometimes, check out the episode ‘I Love Lucy’…). Get to know her in our interview below! She is hilarious, dorable and apparently, has a thing for egging things.

Tell us about your current show, KILLJOYS and your character, Lucy.

The Killjoys is a comedic and dramatic action TV series set in space. It follows a trio of bounty hunters, known as Killjoys, who chase deadly warrants through the Quad, a distant area that is near the start of a violent class war among multiple planets. And their mode of transportation is the sleek and sassy AI spaceship, Lucy. She’s been called the fouth Killjoy and loves her humans… no bias but I think she’s amazing!

INTERVIEW: Tommie-Amber Pirie, Witching It Up on BITTEN

20130910_shalanandpaul_0028 You know, it’s true — Canada gets a lot of cool shows, and one of those include Space and SyFy’s original series, BITTEN. Enough with the male driven cast of werewolves show! Bitten is about a female werewolf and her struggle between her supernatural world while trying to live a normal life. Tommie-Amber Pirie joins the cast of BITTEN and was kind enough to answer a few questions about her upcoming role as a witch on the show. Werewolves and witches, need I say more? Read on and get to know Tommie-Amber with us. Did we mention she had worked with Daniel Radcliffe before as well?

Tell us about joining the cast of BITTEN and your role as a witch? What can you tell us about your character?

Yes! I have had the pleasure of joining the amazing team of the BITTEN cast and crew for season two as a witch named Paige Winterbourne. Her and her coven join the pack in this up and coming season and many exciting things ensue! I can’t say too much about her role in the season but know that she is a great addition to the series. Not only because I have a job! Ha! But because more female power on this show rocks! Everything thus far had been utterly enjoyable. I am thrilled to go to work every day.

INTERVIEWS, TOP STORIES

INTERVIEW: ‘Defiance’ Actor Trenna Keating

Trenna 1Defiance is takes place in the not so distant future where aliens and humans coexist on a war ravaged Earth. The city that was once known as St. Louis is now known as Defiance. There we meet a slew of people including the snarky alien town doctor, Doc Yewll played by Canadian actor Trenna Keating. Doc Yewll is considered one of the breakout characters of this show, and I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Trenna Keating about her. The interview took place over Skype and after talking about our addiction to coffee for about five minutes we proceeded to the interview which, by the way, was a lot of fun.

In this interview she talks about her character on Defiance, the challenges of playing an alien, the appeal of snarky characters, and her love for TV and especially Arrested Development.

First of all, congratulations on Defiance getting renewed for a second season.

Thank you! Yeah, that was really exciting for us. I’ve been on shows before and you always hope and things sound good, but you don’t want to get your hopes up because things can happen, so I was thrilled to find that out.
