Got my Gyaru On

THREE APPLES // hello kitty gyaru night

Went to ZIPPERCUT‘s Japanology Hello Kitty/Gyaru chapter briefly last Wednesday night! Felt a little strange in my attempt to emulate the gyaru style— good enough for the first (last??) attempt, I suppose? Unfortunately, I didn’t get to stay long and take as many photos that night.

The event was already well on its way by the time I got there. The hair stylists and make-up aritsts were busy making girls look pretty. I sat in at the beginning of the gyaru lecture by the guest speaker. I wished my headache/ill feelings didn’t overcome me so I could have sat through the whole slideshow lecture… this is one of those Japanese subcultures that has always interested me, but I’ve never taken the time to delve into its full history. It’s a strange dynamic of Japanese women attempting to take back some ‘power’ in a society where women were expected to be subservient. In a way, they are taking what was expected of them and turning it against the social standards! I’ve always found Japan’s extreme rebellions quite interesting… but somehow, it all goes back to a large, fashion movement.

Japanology : BOSOZOKU

I never got around to posting about this event— better late than never, I guess! Royal-T Cafe, Bubblepunch and Zippercut host a monthly(ish) event called ‘Japanology’. Each month, they pick a topic of focus about one of Japan’s many, and most of the time deviant, subcultures. In September, I attended a movie screening and lecture about Bosozoku, aka biker gangs in Japan!

There was a small photo booth set up with a vintage motorcycle as prop for the models. It was fun hanging out and pretending to be a ‘yanki‘ for the night.

I admit, I use to daydream about joining a Japanese girl biker gang! This was as close as I could get, I guess…

pinning on the cape

Not only was Crusaders & Haters full of superhero fun– but myself and fellow blogger, Nancy (aka Mjade) has been reunited after two years! Whew! It’s been awhile! But she is currently visiting from England up until Comic-Con in San Diego next weekend.

These type of nerdy parties are more of my scene than hers, so we all appreciate her making the effort to attend! GO NANCY!

Missy, Nancy, and me!

This is by far one of the more crowded Royal-T event that I’ve attended. The art show was curated by Danie Franzese, and the costume opening party was organized by the lovely Mandy of ZIPPERCUT. Good music, good crowd, and a great photographer (Drew Yoon) was present to take pictures at the photo booth.

Of course, the usual crowd of ladies– and some gentlemen!– who loves to dress up attended sporting some great costumes!

Who said nerds couldn’t have a classy and fun party?
